The type of coffee that Nespresso and Keurig coffee makers produce is the primary distinction between the two brands. Technology aside, the consumer focuses most on flavor, and these companies cater to their customer’s tastes. After Gaillard’s reforms, Nespresso finally took off, but it is Favre who tends to take the plaudits as the creator. The story of the tinkerer playing with pipes and valves in his workshop is more appealing than the smooth corporate rebranding exercise. Gaillard is only too glad to correct the record. “Those who really know the story, know it was me,” he said. “Favre was a technician. What is the difference between a coffee machine and a Nespresso machine? The effect of coffee consumption on CM markers has been extensively investigated in both observational and intervention studies. Overall, studies seem to suggest that coffee may be part of a healthy diet, providing in general more benefit than harm to human health, especially at doses of three–four cups a day [ 26]. About potential detrimental effects, coffee and mainly unfiltered coffee, has been found to potentially increase serum lipids, due to the significant content of diterpenes [ 6]. Conversely, both filtered and decaffeinated coffees showed negligible effects on blood lipids [ 26]. Despite this evidence, a thorough comparison with findings from the previous studies could be problematic, due to the high heterogeneity among studies in terms, for example, of variability of amount and types of coffees drunk or population characteristics.
