Any light can be used. The trap is sold with the battery powered Goodden GemLight Super. It can also be used with any other light. We no longer offer actinic lights because test results are well below those with the Goodden GemLight Super, and their batteries are heavy. The third edition of this notable field guide has been fully revised, updated and restructured. Several different types of moth trap are widely available. So clothes moth traps are best used in warmer weather (normally 65 degrees or more) but there may still be the need to use treatments where larvae are still causing damage outside warmer times. Where do Clothes Moths Come From? It's simple: if there are no adult male moths to impregnate the female clothes moths, that means no moth eggs can be laid. This needs to be achieved as it is the clothes moth larvae that hatch from the eggs which cause the wardrobe destruction that we all want to avoid, not the adult clothes moths themselves. The shape of a moth trap has more to do with its effective surface area than anything else. Since most moth traps have an adhesive on them, the shape makes it easier for you to catch a larger amount of male moths before you need to dispose of the trap and place a new one. Ideally, you should opt for a moth trap that utilizes a larger surface area and is effective in trapping more moths. It might be due to the stage of the moth life cycle where some larvae are still pupating. Mercury Vapour bulbs have recently been phased out as part of the Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive. Therefore, we have removed the traps from our range and are now focusing on actinic replacements. The moth traps are already actively trapping both clothes and food moths. Fingers crossed for their long-term effectiveness, but without MothKiller all would be lost! Positioning of the Traps is important. They need to be 3-6 feet above carpet level. If you have any other moth deterrents placed nearby they can distract from the Traps. If you suspect an infestation of food moths, such as the Indian meal moth or Mediterranean flour moth, it is a good idea to place traps in all cupboards, drawers and shelves that may be affected. Brush any clothes made of wool or fur after you wear them outside. Moth eggs can easily infiltrate your closet by affixing themselves to these materials, so scraping them off regularly can help keep any moth larvae from getting inside. Clothes moths may arrive in your home from adjacent properties or gardens. We have also seen instances of bird nests under roof eaves and in chimneys being sources of infestation for our customers - think bird feathers as being a keratin-rich food source for clothes moth larvae. It is important to understand that to get rid of moths naturally will take longer than using pesticide treatments but can be done with patience. If there are only adult clothes or pantry moths flying in your home, then moth traps will likely achieve this over time as they take the male moths out of the breeding cycle and reduce the population progressively. However, if you have damage to clothing or home textiles, or an infestation in your pantry, you will need to take fast action on clearing out and treating infested clothing or foods, and then thoroughly cleaning the location of the infestation to eliminate any remaining eggs or larvae. Continue to defend through the use of moth traps and natural repellents. Actinic bulbs produce a small amount of UV light alongside the visible light which makes them more “attractive” to moths. They are not as bright as Mercury Vapour bulbs but because they don’t get as hot they are much safer to use, particularly for public and attended trapping events. They are also much less of a disturbance to neighbours if you are using the trap in your garden.
Fill your home with cedar. You can also use cedar oil in a spray bottle diluted with water or in a diffuser that can spread the scent of cedar. Moths and other insects are repelled by the pheromones in cedar. Too be honest I was getting quite depressed about never making inroads into getting rid of our moths. These traps are very very effective. Customers also wonder why they have damage to clothes and / or carpets when they have been actively trapping clothes moths - this is usually explained by larvae that have hatched and not yet pupated eating the natural animal fibres. In time they will turn into adult moths as part of their natural lifecycle. The trigger for clothes moths to pupate, turn into adults and fly to new locations in search of new food sources to lay their eggs is warmer weather, and ideally a degree of humidity. Make sure that moths are released in an overgrown location to minimise the risk of them being predated by birds. If you wish to release them in the evening, cover the trap and place it in a cool, shaded location during the day.Extremely high or freezing conditions are temperatures that kill clothes moths. We always recommend that either dry cleaning or deep freezing infested clothes and / or home textiles for 72 hours should kill any eggs and larvae present. While extremely high temperatures can kill clothes moths and it may be a process that can be conducted through heat treatments by a professional pest controller, it is not something that you can achieve at home on your own.
