About this deal

Both traditional and smart TRVs sense the air temperature in the room and begin to close off the valve once the desired setting is reached. Traditional TRVs do this mechanically by using a sensing head that expands the temperature, so these are fit and forget products that require little to no maintenance.

Some manufacturers have produced a wireless TRV that can be controlled and adjusted from a smart phone, however unlike smart TRVs they do not communicate with the thermostat to bring the boiler on and off. The thermostat will have to be on anyway and the only real benefit is that you do not have to physically adjust the TRVs, they can be done from your phone. The products below are only wireless TRVs. The Tado TRVs can work in the same way. Smart TRVs This may be a faulty head. Change the suspect head for one you know is working fine. If the radiator shuts off/opens up with the new head on, replace the original TRV. If the radiator still does not shut down, the problem most likely lies at the valve and it will need replacing by a plumber. Yes, in many cases this is the easiest way to control a combi boiler as it combines time and temperature into one unit. A programmable thermostat is a single unit that combines the functionality of a time control and a room thermostat. Instead of having ON/OFF periods, a programmable room thermostat lets you set different temperatures at different times throughout the day. conventional boiler. It’s used in conjunction with a time control and whilst it cannot influence the temperature of the water entering the cylinder, once the set point for the whole cylinder is achieved it can stop the call for heat.Time controls are devices that allow you to set when your heating comes on and goes off. They can be programmed so that you never forget to turn your heating off (or on). Time controls work alongside your temperature controls. When your time control is on, if the room reaches the set temperature the thermostat will override the time control and turn off your heating. Timeswitches and programmers are both time control devices.

That’s clever, as you can have a spare room that’s set to keep it just warmed (to prevent condensation) using one schedule; when a guest comes, you can apply a different schedule. It’s slightly more work to do that here than with custom modes on Honeywell Evohome, but I still appreciate the flexibility on offer. Smart TRVs take the place of a traditional thermostatic radiator valve and close the valve using a motor that’s driven by batteries that will need to be changed periodically. These offer greater accuracy and have the ability to stop the call for heat when set point is achieved. They can also directly call for heat in individual rooms avoiding energy waste.

The Drayton Wiser system lets you set a schedule for each thermostat, indicating a desired temperature for each room in your home at different times of the day. For example, you can set the bathroom to warm up first thing in the morning and last thing at night, if you don’t use it during the day. As already mentioned, you can override a set schedule at any time by manually twisting the top of the radiator thermostat (turning the heating on in that room for 30 minutes) or from the app, where you can choose for the heating to remain on for between 30 minutes and three hours. I slightly prefer the Tado and Honeywell Evohome TRVs, which show the current temperature on their display and let you set a new target temperature.

There’s also an Away mode, where your heating is set to a reduced temperature (configured by you). This mode is handy when you’re out or on holiday. There’s only manual operation of this, but you can use the IFTTT channel to build your own geolocation service, either for one device or, with a service such as Life360, for your entire family. A thermostatic radiator valve allows you to set a radiator at a different temperature, so you can heat your home only where required. This can help reduce your home's energy consumption. Some of the system radiators use generic 32mm TRV bodies and old Myson 28mm TRV's with third party metal adapters, they all work perfectly. Calibrate the TRV by turning and holding it to minus (the blue LED). The TRV pin should descend onto the valve pin and close off the valve. Although the TRVs make a small humming noise while operating, I found that they were very quiet in operation. Once I was used to them, I could easily sleep while they operated. Banging or hammering in a system is caused by excess pressure or water turbulence in a system rapidly lifting and shutting the valve seat. If this is happening it would be advisable to get a qualified heating engineer to take a look at your system.

Alexa and Google Home support means that you can control your heating using your voice. Alexa recognises individual rooms so that you can adjust the heat automatically, and you can also find out what the temperature is in each room. A combi-boiler is typically found in smaller properties and provides on demand hot water compared to a conventional boiler that requires hot water to be stored in a cylinder. What happens if I want heating on when my time control isn’t set to be on – do I need to reprogramme it every time?

Clever Features

make sure the temperature you set outside of a schedule is low enough to prevent the device from demanding heat when you don't want it Both Worcester and Vaillant offer their own smart TRVS that are only compatible with their products. Advantages RF stands for radio frequency and is a method for devices to communicate with each other without the need for wires. Ref the comments in this post about utilising existing Danfoss TRV bodies, most of my system uses old Danfoss RA's which I have converted to smart using the supplied adapters. As combi boilers only require controls for central heating the easiest method is to install either a wired or wireless programmable thermostat where both time and temperature settings are handled in the same unit.
