It is often used alongside an antibiotic in treating traveller’s diarrhoea. This is a condition that occurs after consuming contaminated food or drinking water, usually in a foreign country, most often caused by a bacterial infection. If you are travelling it is a good idea to carry Dioralyte with you as a precaution.

Preparing this medicine Dioralyte Relief must be mixed with water before taking. • Prepare just before the medicine is going to be taken. Do not make in advance. If you are giving it to a baby over the course of the day, you can keep the drink in a refrigerator for up to 24 hours • Only dissolve the powder in water. Do not dissolve it in anything else• Use fresh drinking water for adults and children over 1 year old. If fresh water is not available, use water which has been freshly boiled and cooled • Always use water which has been freshly boiled and cooled for babies aged 3 months to 1 year Dioralyte Relief contains 2.5 vol % ethanol (alcohol). If the illness is not improving within 24-36 hours consult your doctor. If diarrhoea persists unremittingly for longer than 36 hours the patient should be reassessed by the physician. If refrigerated the solution may be stored for up to 24 hours, otherwise any solution remaining one hour after reconstitution should be discarded.

This may be harmful to people with something called ‘phenylketonuria’. Dioralyte Relief contains 2.5 vol % ethanol (alcohol). One dose contains 191 mg of ethanol, which is about the same amount of alcohol as 4 ml of beer or 1.7 ml of wine. This can be harmful to people with a drink problem. Also take this into account if you are pregnant, breast-feeding or giving this to a child, have liver disease or epilepsy If you are breast feeding, continue to feed normally. Your baby may need less breast milk so you may need to express some of your milk

Dioralyte warnings

No specific precautions are necessary in the elderly. However, care should be taken when administering Dioralyte Relief solution in conditions where normal electrolyte balance may be disturbed (such as severe vomiting or diarrhoea).

The contents of each sachet should be dissolved in 200ml (approx. 7fl oz) of drinking water. Use fresh drinking water for adults and children. For infants, and where drinking water is unavailable, the water should be freshly boiled and cooled. The solution should be made up immediately before use and may be stored for up 24 hours in a refrigerator, otherwise any solution remaining an hour after reconstitution should be discarded. The solution itself must not be boiled. No specific precautions are necessary in the elderly. However, care should be taken when administering Dioralyte Relief solution in conditions where normal electrolyte balance may be disturbed (such as severe vomiting or diarrhoea). Dioralyte Relief should not be used for self-treatment by patients on low potassium or sodium diets. For oral administration only. Dioralyte should not be reconstituted in diluents other than water. Each Sachet should always be dissolved in 200ml of water. A weaker solution than recommended will not contain the optimal glucose and electrolyte concentration and a stronger solution than recommended may give rise to electrolyte imbalance. If diarrhoea persists for longer than 24-48 hours the patient should be seen by a physician. Dioralyte should not be used for the self treatment of chronic or persistent diarrhoea except under medical supervision. Dioralyte shall not be used for treatment in infants below the age of 24 months without medical supervision. Infants under the age of 2 years with diarrhoea should be seen by a physician as soon as possible.
