Gobstoppers have been sold in traditional sweet shops for at least a century, often sold by weight from jars. As gobstoppers dissolve very slowly, they last a very long time in the mouth, which is a major factor in their popularity. It is tough to get Chewy Gobstoppers; if you do, they are different from the original, according to fans. One day Chewy Gobstoppers will make a triumphant return to store shelves. How long does a Gobstopper last? Gobstoppers usually consist of a number of layers, each layer dissolving to reveal a differently colored (and sometimes differently flavored) layer, before dissolving completely. Gobstoppers are too hard to bite without risking dental damage (hence the name "jawbreaker"). [ citation needed]

This was the hard center that was used to add all the other layers onto the Gobstopper. The layers might be colorful or offer different flavors as well. This process took a couple of weeks to complete so that each layer of liquid sugar could harden properly in between dipping processes. There have also been some cases where parents sued companies after accidents related to their children consuming Gobstoppers. In one case, a girl was said to suffer severe burns when a Wonka Everlasting Gobstopper exploded in her face after being frozen more than one time. This was apparently not the only accident of this nature that happened in the early 2000s, right before the Wonka line of candies was discontinued by Nestle.

Another retro treat from the early 1970s Wonka brand lineup was Tart N’ Tinys. These were miniature sweets that came in a zippered box. Also, as one might imagine from the name, Candy Blog adds that they didn’t garner as much attention as Wonka Bars or “Everlasting Gobstoppers.” Thus, Gobstoppers gained so much popularity in those days. Fans of Gene Wilder would likely recognize Everlasting Gobstoppers because they played a significant role in the 1971 movie’s plot. Thus, they are a crucial part of the Willy Wonka Candy Company’s product lineup. In 2003, Taquandra Diggs, a nine-year-old girl in Starke, Florida, suffered severe burns, allegedly from biting on an exploding Wonka Everlasting Gobstopper that had been refrigerated, left out in the sun, then refrigerated again. Diggs and several other alleged victims' families filed lawsuits against Nestlé for medical bills resulting from plastic surgery as well as pain and suffering; the matters were later settled outside of court for an undisclosed amount. Gobstoppers are named this way because the slang word for mouth in Britain is “gob”. This means that this candy was sold with the idea that it would stop your “gob” from making noise while you were eating it. The size of the candy can have an impact on how true this is, but the original product was marketed with this silly name regardless of the size of the Gobstopper itself.
