About this deal

Before you begin washing fresh produce, wash your hands well with soap and water. Be sure that any utensils, sinks, and surfaces you’re using to prepare your produce are also thoroughly cleaned first. If you don’t plan on refrigerating the wash, and expect making a large amount of the wash while using it for more than a month or so, you might be better off buying a powdered form of USP citric acid and acetic acid, and diluting this with distilled water instead. Imagine taking a large, tasty bite out of your favorite fruits or vegetables and being told immediately after that it was infected with E. coli. It sounds a little scary, yet this is a potential scenario when you don’t wash fruits and vegetables before eating them. Homemade vegetable wash is an important way to take care of this problem. You can also use castile soap without essential oils as an effective produce wash as well. Use the same ratio as above, just omit the essential oils!

What may be the best and most affordable way to clean fruits and veggies comes from a recent study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, which compared the effectiveness of plain water, a Clorox bleach solution, and a baking soda and water solution.

Refrain from rinsing your bagged, pre-washed veggies. Most are far more sanitary than the average kitchen sink. The point is, we’re big fans of fresh produce over here. But pesticide residue? Not so much. Although we avoid the dirty dozen and buy organic whenever possible, there is still the possibility of some residue due to pesticide drift from other fields.

I recommend mixing the ingredients in a pitcher first because the baking soda reacts with the vinegar and lemon juice and will overflow from the top of the spray bottle. Use a funnel to pour the mixed wash solution into a clean sprayer bottle. This vinegar-based wash will keep for three months on your counter or in a cabinet. Simply give it a shake before spraying to disperse the ingredients. However, if your veggie wash changes colour or has a strange aroma, it should be discarded. More Natural Cleaning Ideas to Try But still, even fruits and veggies from a local farm need a good washing because…. Dirt, bugs and mold! They discovered that a 10% salt water solution was effective in removing a large percentage of pesticides from produce, far more so than washing with plain water. Perhaps surprisingly, the baking soda solution was found to be most effective at removing pesticide residues from the surface of apples. However, homemade vegetable wash made with water, vinegar, and lemon juice is a safe and effective option for cleaning vegetables. We recommend waiting until right before you eat to use a veggie wash. Too much moisture promotes mold growth. Washing Vegetables with Vinegar
