About this deal

South Africa, Mpumalanga province. The farm owners and the poor rural population experience a deja-vu. They are to move, the land is being redistributed and sold. They had just defeated apartheid when an international investor struggle for property began, dubbed as 'land reform' by the government. Not everyone likes that: local organisations are trying to help, and an anonymous resistance group Land Collective is forming and sabotaging with online statements. In The Burning Land, Bernard Cornwell, "the reigning king of historical fiction" ( USA Today), delivers a rousing saga of Anglo-Saxon England-an irresistible new chapter in his thrilling Saxon Tales, the epic story of the birth of England and the legendary king who made it possible. What Mr Cornwell is doing—it's often a good strategy for a historical novelist—is writing into a gap in our knowledge. The Anglo-Saxons, for instance, thought they'd won a big battle at Farnham in 893, but the "Chronicle" is strangely silent on who was leading them. Why? We know that it wasn't Alfred, who was occupied elsewhere. Was the leader his son-in-law Æthelred, Alfred's candidate for ruler (but not king) of Free Mercia? How did Alfred intend to realize his dream of assimilating Free Mercia, reconquering Danish Mercia, and rolling up the other kingdoms to create, for the first time ever, a political unit called "England"? The characters all seem so human. Sometimes they make wise decisions, while at other times they seem to be their own worst enemies. For example, Uhtred is usually making very good choices and strategies when he has sufficient time to think it all out. But when he is enraged, he can do the stupidest things.

Uhtred of Bebbanburg’s mind is as sharp as his sword. A thorn in the side of the priests and nobles who shape his fate, this Saxon raised by Vikings is torn between the life he loves and those he has sworn to serve. However, the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications (DECC) announced that there would be two further extensions in 2023. England is still broken up into pieces. The Danes are threatening to overrun the land. Saxon King Alfred (later known as Alfred the Great) was holding on to Wessex and holding out hope of one day uniting the entire country under his banner. But needs the help of fighting men like our anti-hero hero Uhtred of Bebbanburg. The fifth novel in Bernard Cornwell’s epic and bestselling series on the making of England and the fate of his great hero, Uhtred of Bebbanburg. Now a majorBBC2 TV show. I see the injustice of what’s happening in the US with the death of George Floyd. I’m old enough to remember the beating of Rodney King vividly. It’s still happening 28 years later.

Uhtred is military governor of Lundene (London), sharing power with Bishop Erkenwald, whom he dislikes, but respects. Wessex is threatened by two separate Danish forces who have landed in Cent (Kent). Uhtred delivers Alfred's bribe to Jarl (Earl) Haesten, who leads the smaller army, to get him to leave, so that he can deal with the more serious threat posed by Jarl Harald Bloodhair. Uhtred objects to the bribe, as he knows that Haesten is completely untrustworthy. While travelling with a small force to meet Alfred, Uhtred captures Skade, Harald's woman and a reputed sorceress. Harald arrives, leading Saxon captive women, and threatens to kill all of them if Skade is not returned to him. When he starts butchering his prisoners before Uhtred's eyes, Uhtred releases Skade. Skade curses Uhtred as she and Harald make their escape.

Lesedi Motlantshe is the son of one of these multi-billionaires. However, he does not share his father’s way of thinking. He wants to see the land returned to the rightful owners. He travels to Mpumalanga to meet with Kagiso Rapabane, the head of an organisation called Soil of Africa. This charitable organisation tries to help those made homeless by these sales. Shortly after meeting with Kagiso, his body is found – mutilated, clothing scattered, but nothing was stolen. There is no doubt that Alagiah knows his subject (xenophobia and corruption in South Africa) but it is somewhat surprising that, as a BBC journalist/broadcaster, someone who tells stories for a living, he should be so little in control of his material. Constant philosophical battle between paganism and Christianity that depicts given period precisely. The Burning Land continues Bernard Cornwell's bloodthirsty, battle-heavy and viciously violent viking saga. The final exemption for the on-farm burning of cut agricultural green waste is due to come to an end next week. Alfred was once a man who enjoyed a good feast and a dalliance in the bed of a pretty girl. Osferth, his bastard son, exists because of one of those moments of pleasure. He is a constant reminder, like looking in a mirror, of Alfred’s days of illicit pleasure.
