A built-in battery voltage indicator under the button will display battery voltage each time the battery is installed and the end cap is tightened. For example if the voltage is 4.2 V, it will flash four times then pause and then flash two more times. The integrated advance temperature regulation (ATR) technology regulates the output of the HC65 V2 according to the working condition and ambient environment to maintain the optimal performance.

The Nitecore headlamp has a built-in micro USB charging circuit which provides fast and safe charging, which terminates automatically when complete. The micro USB port has a protective cap which shields it from damage. Please note, the rechargeable feature is only compatible when using a Li-ion 18650 battery. The included headband has a typical around-the-head strap and then one over-the-top one. That top strap can be removed, however you wouldn’t have a particularly reliable hold, even despite the amount of adjustment potential you get. USB Type-C. The head torch features three light sources including the primary white light, an auxiliary red light and a high CRI auxiliary white light. The red light can effectively protect night vision and is ideal for watching wildlife, stargazing, emergency use and night photography. The warm CRI>90 white light is suitable for short range illumination and resembles the warmth of sunlight, giving a sharp visual whilst reducing eye strain. The main beam has a rather distinct hotspot with some slight corona and a rather wide usable (almost circular) spill. It also helps that the XM-L2 led is perfectly centred in this sample. There is a slight ring in the main beam when whitewall hunting but is not visible in real world usage. There are tint shifts throughout the beam profile. The hotspot is cool white whilst the corona possess a slight yellowish tint; and the spill having a slight purple tint.

With 3 different LEDs and having “throw” and “flood” on the same headlamp, this is by far one of the most versatile headlamp available. Although the UI might seem a little intimidating at first, after the inital learning curve, it becomes rather straightforward to use. TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS

This light’s Auxiliary White Light (High CRI) and RED light are placed behind a frosted honeycomb-style diffuser lens which provide a soft and artifact-free beam profile for up-close to near range distance usage. This light fits a medium sized hand easily. For headlamps, there isn’t many ways of holding it but rather it would be more of test of comfort whilst it’s on your head. The Nitecore-branded headband held the light sturdily even when doing more vigorous activity (e.g. jogging/running), at no time did the light feel like it was about to fall off. The curvature of the headlamp’s head mounts and cushion from the headband ensures that it does not leave any marks on one’s forehead after prolonged usage. The Nitecore HC65 V2 moved from the CREE XML2 to the Luminus SST40 LED. This is a pretty popular LED that you see in many flashlights these days. Moving from the CREE to the Luminus is a nice upgrade. Like most Nitecore products, my HC65 V2 came with a cool white LED.Although the SST40-W is available in 5000K, 5700K, and 6500K. Mode spacing appears to be progressively brighter to the eye and the modes are well spaced enough to be able to know which mode one is currently in. With that in mind, TLR tend to view mode spacing as battery life indicators (amount of runtime left) rather than the specific output (lumens). Turbo mode started at around 1830 lumens and dropped to roughly 1500 lumens in 2 minutes, and at 10 minutes it was at around 680lumens. At around 20 minutes it settled at roughly 620-630 lumens and ran till it dropped again at the 2 hours and 5 minutes mark, to roughly 40 lumens. This is not the end of the battery life, because it continued at this output, till after 4hours-14minutes it dropped to 1 lumen. It still didn’t turn off, and continued for several hours, although I stopped the test before it turned off. It never really turned off, even after letting it run for several hours. When the light drops to the 1 lumen level, the battery is around 3V. (Specs: 30 min) All output numbers are relative to my homemade Integrating Sphere. It is set up with an Extech SDL400 Lux Meter for measurements including a Kenko PRO1D ND-16 filter. The base measurement is done with a Convoy S2+ that has been tested at 255 lumens.Here is a bonus size comparison picture next to the Oveready TorchLAB BOSS we recently reviewed, which also has an extremely useful RED mode for night vision retention. The battery is rechargeable via a USB-C port at the side of the light and takes approximately 2 hours 25 minutes to fully charge. The CRI for the Auxiliary White Light is said to be >90CRI but Nitecore did not disclose the tint (color temperature). A guesstimate would be in the 4000K ballpark. The blinking (~1.5 sec interval) BLUE indicator depicts charging in progress and BLUE indicator lit (non-blinking) depicts charging has completed.
