About this deal

Told in the points of view of Bernie, Isobel, Tori and the police investigation, THE LEGACIES is unputdownable. Though a number of characters are horrid, Bernie and Tori gave me characters to embrace through their imperfections. He said even beer was too risky, because what if the proctors or the teachers caught someone ‘faced?

The first season follows the events from February 25, 2028 til April 19, 2028, the second season follows the events from June 2028 til March 2029 and the third and fourth seasons follow the events of that spring. You agree that 'rich people doing shady shit get exactly what they deserve' is a genre (and a very entertaining one) That being said, there are plenty of departures from that concept that make accusations of it being derivative pretty much pointless. I can think of a handful of books that share similar starting points. That doesn’t make them all Harry Potter clones.

Put all of the mismatched elements together, and a story won’t hold well (for me), no matter how good the plot. And you know what? The plot in Legacies was the only thing that kept me reading. Total bright spot, even if you can tell from a mile away that this is a set-up book. If you’re into the whole orphan-with-magic-in-a-boarding-school thing, may I point you in the direction of Jennifer Estep’s Touch of Frost? Same clichés, but with more humor and sass. Or if you do try this series – remember that I warned you! I can’t go one freakin paragraph without seeing something inappropriately capitalized or hyphened. Why are things-hyphened that don’t-need-to-be? And why are Things capitalized and given special Importance when they shouldn’t be?

I was less of a fan of how...Eurocentric it was. The students, the magic, the... everything. But based in the authors it wasn't THAT unexpected to me. I enjoy both of them, they just use European (primarily Western European and mostly British Isles) folklore as the basis for most of their stuff I've read. I've gotten spoiled over recent years with more diverse books written with folklore from all over the world as its foundation. But that doesn't negate my enjoyment of this book. Knowing what they now did, it seemed more likely that the “secret society” that might-or-might-not exist among the Oakhurst students was more likely to be allied with Doctor Ambrosius’s enemies and the Whatever than it was to be on the side of the Good Guys. The Legacies is a twisty YA thriller that strikes an addictive balance between glitz and darkness. Think The Inheritance Games meets Gossip Girl with a dash of Euphoria. Goodman introduces us to the Legacy Club, a secret society for New York's richest elite. Every year, prospective members are tapped for an initiation week culminating in the glamorous Legacy Ball. Most new members are shoe-ins, children of existing Legacies and powerful families. But this year, the nomination of scholarship student Tori Tasso threatens to expose the dangerous secrets protected by the Club's elite, and not everyone will make it out alive...

As with any TV series, it’s important for parents to be aware of the content and themes of Legacies before allowing their children to watch it. The show is rated TV-14, meaning it may not be suitable for younger viewers.

The night of the Legacy Ball is supposed to be the best night of these seniors’ lives, a night of haute couture, endless champagne, and plenty of hushed gossip. The teachers at Oakhurst are not only negligent, they are downright cruel. The students don't trust them at all. There is no authority figure, not even the older students, who Spirit and her friends can turn to. I think that was intended to make the characters rely only on themselves, but honestly it made the story kind of dull. There was a lot of talk about needing to go and do more research, and a lot of moments where they are meeting in the library. Not exactly fascinating stuff. And every time they met in the library it seemed like we got more detail about what the library actually looked like. Which was completely unnecessary. While it's a hallowed tradition in YA fiction that the intrepid hero(es) appear to know more than the adults around them, in the end it typically turns out that the adults DID have a clue but didn't interfere for one reason or another. One of the joys of being a fan of a long-running series is discovering the hidden gems and Easter eggs sprinkled throughout its run. Legacies is no exception, with numerous curiosities and references to its predecessors scattered throughout the show. For example, the series premiere features a nod to the pilot episode of The Vampire Diaries, with a car crash and a mysterious girl emerging unscathed. It's not the newest plot in the world, but there's nothing especially wrong with it. At least in theory. But the way this book was executed isn't satisfactory. Or perhaps it's just that there are too many cliches in this book. Julie Plec is a prolific TV producer and writer, with a career spanning over two decades. In addition to her work on The Vampire Diaries and its spin-offs, Plec has also worked on popular shows such as Kyle XY and Containment. Throughout its run, Legacies has delivered some truly memorable episodes and seasons, each offering a fresh take on the supernatural genre. Some standout episodes include “Mombie Dearest,” where Lizzie and Josie Saltzman are reunited with their long-lost mother, and “There’s a World Where Your Dreams Came True,” which explores an alternate reality where Hope never attended the Salvatore School.
