About this deal

Unfortunately this is were I have the issue and as with the markers, it is purely due to the fact I enjoyed the pencils and would like to see more of a range. You may want to use oil-based pencils for your base layers and burnish with wax, or incorporate water-based at some point in the process. To take the guesswork out and for your convenience, I have provided direct links which take you to the products so you can make a purchase if you wish. Both types of pencil can feel luxurious and smooth to use, however that really depends upon which brand you choose.

There is only one set available in this range of colored pencils and that is the 48 set, nothing smaller or bigger. As a beginner, when learning to draw with coloured pencils, start by learning about the supplies you need, then learn some of the essential techniques and start practising to accelerate your skills. I have chose to do my very best and explain how the core feels to me when I layer the pencil on smooth paper or Velum or Mixed Media Paper, or perhaps how brittle the core is when sharpening, how opaque the core is on dark paper, if the core shatters easily etc. Fine tune details and “outlines” last – Details are important, but with colored pencils, they can be defined and refined later in the drawing process. Before I start reviewing let me first state that I am NOT an artist, I have no art training, not even an art GCSE and only started using coloured pencils again 2 months ago.

I use Lyra Rembrandt Polycolors and they are just as smooth and buttery to put down on paper as my Lyras. Luuk Minkman is a seasoned artist renowned for creating photorealistic art with colored pencils and markers. These pencils are available in various sets, with larger sets (72 and 105 pieces) offering a wide array of colors. As with many coloured pencils, the end of the pencil is coloured but this isn’t always an accurate portrayal of the colour you’ll lay down and this often leads to some very strange colour combinations due to “accidents”. The best value artist grade coloured pencils have to be the Bruynzeel Design Colour pencils, these are great quality, highly pigmented wax pencils.Providing a rich colour saturation, these Art-N-Fly pencils did a superb job of some of the test projects I tried out, from realism, comics, and neo-traditional paintings. For those of you with more experience, these are great for a travel set and for creating beautiful images with and the range of colours is ideal for almost any project if you get the largest set of 72 pencils.

The black barrel design with colored ends and gold lettering lends an air of luxury and exclusivity. At first I assumed that using OMS on say Wax pencils worked wonderfully and on oil pencils it didn’t work, but this was never the case in any of my tests. I am finding that the softer lead of the Derwent pencils is better for coverage and the Polychromos (mentioned above) for detail lines but they both blend and layer beautifully with an oil painting quality. Since they’re oil-based, you don’t have to worry about wax blooms (white, cloudy wax that evaporates to the surface from wax-based colored pencils). The core of oil pencils will be made from oil binder and pigment, while wax pencils are made from wax binder and pigment.Oil-based colored pencils behave in a similar manner as wax-based pencils but the binder within the pencil is different. Blick wrote back saying these are just a different kind of pencil and not creamy like an oil pastel, and definitely is not oil paint needing to dry; so at least ruled the latter part out now.

One of the reasons I like to use these coloured pencils is because they do not break as easily as others and maintain a sharp point, compared to wax-based pencils I’ve used. I would say that even if this costs more than I paid for, it is still a good quality oil-based pencil set. Wax colored pencils tend to leave debris and limit the amount of layers the artist can use, unless used in combination with a workable fixative. They sharpen beautifully without the need for an expensive sharpener (I currently use a Lego one from a kids’ stationery set) and have had very few problems with breakages or not being able to get a proper point.
