About this deal

Author Caroline Cauchi details the time before and during Theo's and Jo's courtship through their very brief marriage and early deaths of both young men. Why allot such a small amount of real estate in a 400 page book to the goal of “painting” Jo’s name back into history for her extraordinary contribution to art? It starts out with Johanna, supposedly an aspiring artist, arriving in Paris to live with her brother. With a 70 year old widower waiting for her in Holland, her mother's choice for a husband the pressure builds and she accepts Theo's advances. However, Vincent's disturbing mental and physical issues were a constant worry and as the brothers were extremely close, Theo put Vincent first.

She makes it so with vivid descriptions of late 19th century Paris and populates her novel with, for the most part, real people and excellent characterizations.

Thanks to Johanna, his artwork became a fascination for art lovers and his work even converted those who may not have been enthusiasts. This book offered a fictional glimpse into the life of Theo’s wife- her past, present and the future she sets in motion.

Hans Luijten, who edited Vincent van Gogh's letters for publication by the Van Gogh Museum, was granted permission to see the diary, and used it for his 2019 full-length biography of van Gogh-Bonger, [7] published in English in 2022. Her son and grandson continued her work to shore up the legacy of his uncle Vincent and father Theo, resulting in the Dutch government's construction of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. This was the 1880s and whilst men could and did get away with most things, a woman's name could be blackened by such behaviour. As most know, Paris at the time was one of an artists' free society, debauchery and drunkenness all on the menu, amazing Jo who starts to discard her puritan ways . He was completely and utterly devoted to Vincent, they had a connection that no-one could even come close to, not even Jo.When Jo, as she is known, visits her brother in Paris for the summer, she experiences something new. un libro, questo, che ti entra dentro e che ti fa vivere il romanzo stesso, a partire dall’amore che sboccia tra johanna e théo all’affetto fraterno che c’è con i rispettivi fratelli; ancora i momenti di pazzia di vincent, che ne preannunciano la morte, così come il dolore che attraverserà la protagonista assieme alla famiglia che si è creata. Before I get in to the rest of my review, I just want give a quick mention to one small detail that I absolutely loved, which is that Caroline Cauchi titled every chapter (excluding the diary entries) with the name of a Van Gogh piece, which I thought was a very clever touch. Jo's good friend and sister-in-law Wil van Gogh was hospitalized for mental illness for what turned out to be the rest of her life.

If you approach it as such it is an enjoyable read and it will, as with me, stimulate you into finding out more about that particular period in art and Vincent Van Gogh in particular. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. As an Art History major in undergrad, I was exposed to a lot of information about the techniques, methodology, and significance of the works of Vincent Van Gogh; in addition, I was taught to recognize and analyze them without hesitation.Following her death, her son Vincent Willem van Gogh inherited the collection of some 200 paintings, many drawings, and the Van Gogh brothers' letters, and the voluminous documentation of Jo's business dealings. This book is a creative account of the remarkable woman who became the guardian of Vincent’s legacy. However, it is important to remember that this is a dramatised version of events, and not everything in this book is fact.
