It was good to see her step out of the Shadow that CeCe cast over her, and see her come into her own, through the telling of Flora’s story and the discoveries about her own paternal family that came with it. She’s definitely the character I connect with the most so far in this series, I see myself a lot in her and I think that’s part of why I enjoyed this book so much compared to the first two. She is happy and secure in her home in the Lake District, living close to her idol, Beatrix Potter, when machinations outside of her control lead her to London, and the home of one of Edwardian society’s most notorious players, Alice Keppel.

But I mean this literally happened days before he fell in love with Flora, and Aurelia knew nothing of it yet. In 'The Shadow Sister' our historical heroine is Flora MacNichol, who I instantly adored for her fierce independence and love of animals. I wanted to read fast but also to take my time as the secrets came spilling out one by one and really went in directions I was not expecting. There really wasn't a single character in this installment that was really likable, except maybe the little boy.She is a truly complex character who shaped British history behind the scenes and it was a challenge to depict her fall from grace on the eve of the King’s death. She loves animals and nature more than anything, and keeps a menagerie of various animals she has rescued from somewhere or other, Panther the cat being a central character in her life (which of course appeals to the cat lover in me).
