About this deal

Both feature travels down waterways, descent into steamy, wild jungles and to some extent descent into madness. If you or someone you know has ever been addicted to a drug or even a person you’ll feel this like a gut punch. Including one that gives you the ability to unhinge your jaw and bite every ghost in 30 feet of you, all at once. McLeod Chapman's writing is impeccable throughout and conjures up many a trippy, nightmarish and atmospheric scene.

I will caveat by saying that if you don't connect to the characters, this might be an entirely useless book for you - but I have my own Silas, so I was straight in and eating this up with a spoon. This book is beautiful and poetic and haunting, and I've never been so emotionally affected by a book before. In Book 2 make Grandfather Mantis incorpereal (possibly just adding weakness to ghost touch among the weakness to force and positive). Along the way, though, there are some twists as we start to learn more about both Ghost the drug and the ghosts that are haunting the characters, and Silas’s involvement with Ghost before he died, as well as Tobias’s current involvement. The warriors of Minata frequently contend with lost spirits of the Taumatan people that haunt their shattered lands to this day.

The dialogue: Right from the first page I found it to be grating, and it just didn’t get better unfortunately.

She’s on the cusp of interviewing for a new job in the field she wants a career in and is trying to “do all the right things”, and she starts thinking that she needs to cut Silas and his addictive, erratic behaviors out of her life to be able to do this. Rife with body horror and hallucinations, some of which may get a bit too trippy for some, the narrative sucks readers into its dark, disorienting world.
