About this deal

With these chosen finalists, the second phase of the project was to invite journalists and design specialists to judge the badges. After our first year when the club badge was without doubt the Celtic Cross, it was another 90 years before the club badge would appear on the jerseys.

The team also wore an away strip with a large three-leafed shamrock as the badge in the fifties, but then all the strips were without a crest on the strip. There are some cracking stories about the memorable characters and situations that developed over the years as we travelled on Celtic business. The badges below were created by the club and presented to players in honour of the first team’s great achievement in season 1907-08 for winning a domestic quadruple. Celtic’s shirts did not feature a regular badge until 1977 (based on a badge that first appeared on the cover of their 50th [Golden] Jubilee Dinner menu in 1938), upon which most of their subsequent badges have been based.

I have mixed feelings about this one, I have always been a massive fan of the clover and the inclusion of black to help things stand out.Along the top of the resulting green frame, they’ve written the club’s name – ‘the Celtic Football Club’ – in white letters. I saw a reference in The Celt fanzine some time ago to there being an earlier four leaf clover emblem used by the club. Unfortunately for Fergus his idea didn’t take into consideration the strength of feeling amongst the Celtic support and it didn’t get off the ground.

My father told me that Kelly made two meaningful contributions to Celtic: (1) he successfully defended the right to fly the flag above the old jungle; (2) he brought back the big man to Celtic Park. May perpetual light shine upon my Auntie Bridget and my Dad and Canon McCabe, and all deceased members of Celtic Supporters Clubs throughout the world. The badge is displayed on all articles of Celtic merchandise and countless millions of people all over the world have seen this unique badge on an equally unique and impressive hooped shirt.

Ned and Elizabeth were married in Shettleston in 1892 and they produced 16 children, the first born Mary 1893 and the youngest in 1915 – James. This seems to have been a one off and was down to the club winning four trophies and not three as there are no other examples of the 4 leaf being used until 1938. It was on that day that an Irish priest, Brother Wilfrid, gathered his fellow believers there and suggested that they organize a soccer club.
