Blending themes and ideas you might find familiar from everything from Firefox to Top Gun; from Independence Day to Jurassic Park; from Real Steel to Avatar, Pacific Rim moves past its ostensible Transformers-meets- Godzilla labelling and remains the closest thing we’ll likely ever get to a live action Evangelion movie, which is a hell of a compliment. Sirens warning you, hurricane, rain, waves and all out war all compete to earn your undivided attention.

And said programme seemingly done for as governments go for big walls on the coast instead, the Jaeger programme has to survive on it's own. This movie didn’t make the mad cash that the big Marvel properties usually pull in, but in my opinion, summer action blockbusters don’t come any bigger than this. Pacific Rim set the benchmark for upscaled 4K releases, besting many native 4K discs out there through exceptional HDR and WCG implementation which go some way towards making up of the loss of that extra dimension. Heck, despite all the debris exploding everywhere in this flick, the dialog is a true winner as it always remains loud, clear and intelligible throughout. I went IMAX 3-D and my ears bled in ecstasy from the stomping of the robots feet on the hard pavement to the smashing of their fists into the jaws of the Kaijus.

I'm bumping this because I bought Pacific Rim HDR and a 4K Blu-ray player over the weekend and it's glorious.Whether you see it or not, the film fits right into the heart of the summer blockbuster action lineup with its sheer gargantuan size alone. VUDU has also announced support for HDR10, but I haven't heard specifics about when that will be available.

At startup, the disc goes straight to a menu screen with a static image of the cover art and music playing in the background.I absolutely love the guy now (well I still won’t be as forgiving with him for the Hellboy films or his involvement in Mama)! Pacific Rim was an usual blockbuster, with the scale and impact of a Transformers movie, but the vacuous void at the core of every one of Bay's sound and fury sequels filled - to some extent - by more thoughtful visionary director Guillermo del Toro's sensibilities. It's really the HDR, WCG and Dolby Vision that make all the difference, however, with even the opening Universal banner and ensuing Studio credits having imaginative stylisation that lends itself particularly well towards the theme of enjoying vividly colourful future tech in all its radiant glory, something furthered by all the HUDs and holographic readouts, and even the damn exit signs.
