About this deal

If you like sweeping family dramas, contemporary novels and commentary, you will absolutely love Little Monsters. There was no character development and the individuals were all just as shitty as they were when the book started.

He has had an excellent career as an acclaimed oceanographer working at a renowned institute on Cape Cod. Their father, Adam, a brilliant oceanographer, raised them mostly on his own in his remote home on Cape Cod, where the attachment between Ken and Abby deepened into something complicated—and as adults their relationship is strained.Howl with laughter and squeal with delight at this monstrously funny picture book and audio CD from number one bestselling author David Walliams, illustrated by the awesome Adam Stower! Tom's scrapbooks are always fascinating, full of photographs, notes and snippets of history that inspire his books, and this one is no different! This novel, spanning the first half of the 20th century, follows the trials and tribulations of a farming family in Virginia. It is about family, including a complicated sibling relationship, and how grief affects them following the death of their mother. When Ken and Abby’s unknown half sister, Steph, appears on the scene, thorny truths come to light, upending the Gardner family story and detonating long-suppressed emotions.

If the cover is an ode to the breathtaking Cape Cod landscape, the pages inside are an homage to the life, history, sights, sounds and tastes of the famed New England island. Compare and contrast Jenny and Steph’s arcs as they (re-)calibrate their place in this complicated family. We get a slow unraveling of the two children/ adults and their father that shares glimpses of who they are and how their relationships became so disconnected yet strongly gnarled together.I don’t read a lot of literary fiction, and I dislike most of what I do read, so this one was a pleasant surprise.

That was a time that put pressure on everything, emphasized the little cracks and widened them into chasms. Emily, the mother “Ken lost, and Abby never had,” died immediately after Abby’s birth, and looms like a shadow throughout the novel. Hell, the simple fact that he was weighing the pros and cons of the decision was evidence enough that he was behaving rationally. She “couldn’t pinpoint a date, but over the last few years, the distance between the three of them had turned into something more palpable, a liquid congealing into a solid.

In the pitch-black depths of the Pacific Ocean north of the Galápagos Islands, they’d encountered evidence—in the form of foot-long clams, giant red tube worms, and spiny white crabs—that even in darkness, there was life. The pond and the woods blurred, and he turned his concentration inward, hovering over the dazzling presence of his idea, which was still just out of reach. He raised his daughter and son single-handedly, (who were nicknamed little monsters when they were kids) when his beloved wife died in childbirth. His daughter Abby and son Ken are too wrapped up in their own lives to notice the telltale signs in Adam’s changing behavior and the plot is in motion for a delicious and compelling family drama.
