About this deal

I Think Our Son Is Gay is yet another LGBTQIA+ manga that began life on ‘social media’ as have several of the titles we’ve reviewed here recently. Giving queer and trans youth tools for uncovering who they are is vital, and it has to happen at their pace. An often absent and oblivious father is set up to provide a potentially dramatic turn in the story in some future volume. Fortunately, Tomoko is able to defuse the situation and gently tells him to be a bit more open-minded.

The internet can be really helpful, but it is not perfect, as there has been a noted presence of queer and trans kids shaped by the puritanical and hateful environments they may find themselves in, adopting queerphobic and transphobic ideals because they don’t have room or space or freedom to encounter healthy and safe adults that can show them the joys of queerness and transness, including appropriate knowledge and resources around sexual health, consent, and boundaries. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. I appreciate this manga because it is a helpful guide for approaching the queer and trans kids in our lives. Straight Gay: Tomoko's coworker Tono has a man in his life whom he appears affectionate towards, but he comes across as Ambiguously Gay until months later, when he mentions that they're boyfriends and have been living together for ten years. But even though Hiroki’s got his mom and kid brother in his corner for his personal journey, his dad is another story.

Time to meet the Aoyama family again in the second slice-of-life volume of Okura’s I Think Our Son is Gay. Với sự đáng yêu của Hiroki, sự hài hước trước tình huống của người mẹ Tomoko luôn làm mình bật cười. The way she let his slip ups slide (such as the use of "boyfriend" rather than "girlfriend"), understanding that he has thought through a lot of issues (such as not potentially not being able to have children in a gay relationship), allowing him to reveal his preferences at his own pace - I could go on, but let's just say that it's utterly adorable, relatable (no matter where your preferences lie) and should to be read! Or So I Heard: When Hiroki realizes he's been telling his mother what he finds attractive in a man, he tries to pass it off as relaying the opinions of the girls in his class. Hiroki’s at that age, but he’s not exactly skewing heteronormative and his mother, Tomoko, has begun to notice.

Big Ol' Eyebrows: It's not always obvious due to the art style, but Hiroki's are large enough to get bed-head. I Think Our Son is Gay continues to be an absolute delight of a comic with a cast of characters the reader cannot help but root for. Open-Minded Parent: Tomoko knows that Hiroki is gay, but she doesn't mind one bit and tries her best to be supportive of him while waiting for him to come out on his own. As Hiroki comes home from school every day with new tales of friend Daigo’s feats, Tomoko wonders about the future of her eldest’s schoolboy crush. When we react poorly, with anger or sadness or dismissal, when queer and trans kids tell us about who they are, we reveal that we are unsafe.

Unfortunately, since he's not aware of Hiroki's sexuality or that he's trying to hide it, it ends up really awkward for him. This manga is from the perspective of a loving and gentle mother trying to piece together her son’s sexuality while also working to subtly show her support without giving away what she knows so as to allow him to come out on his own terms. It's also fine for ungendered languages, but an attempt at translating Hiroki's answer into a gendered language—which includes most European languages—and still sounds natural will be very challenging.

While, yes, it is an adjustment to learn something new and figure out how to support your child, parents’ own feelings should not be at the center of their kids coming out.

Chapter 43 has her pointing out he very often goes into "observation mode" in which he becomes entirely too engrossed in staring at men that are his type. Tomoko asks if he would do that with his crush, and Hiroki sounds extremely reluctant, only considering that when in private. But now that Hiroki's in his first year of high school, his thoughts are turning ever so slightly to sex and romance…and his mom can't help but notice his slips of the tongue when he's talking about who he likes. The next eight pages are Tomoko's recollection of the story behind that towel: Hiroki's fifth-grade heartbreak.

Supportive Tomoko has an inkling Hiroki might be gay, but she's going to let him figure it out for himself.Gender Nonconforming Equals Gay: Inverted — Akiyoshi has a very stereotyped view of gay people, so when he hears that Tomoko's coworker has come out, he assumes the man will start to cross-dress at work. Everything happens under Tomoko's watchful eye, as ever, but this time, Tomoko decides a little direct involvement on her part might not got amiss in the final volume of I Think Our Son Is Gay, vol. The humor is very gentle and a bit repetitive but still exceedingly cute as a doting and accepting mother suspects her son may be gay due to constant slips of the tongue and lack of poker face when he talks about or sees that one certain boy. We have to respond quickly and with care, lest we create wounds that may take time to fade, if they do at all. Yuri is Wise Beyond His Years and has a levelheaded thought process due to his stoic demeanor while his older brother Hiroki is often a tad impulsive and overreactive though by no means stupid.
