But the good news is I can hop over to her blog The Good Life Franceat any time which is a wealth of a resource for all things France. The property bought By Janine Marsh and her husband did not in any way fit into the romantic châteaux diet that we Brits have been fed on.

The book could perhaps have done with more extensive descriptions of the neighbouring towns and villages in this north-east corner of France, within an easy drive of Calais and the cross-Channel ferries or Eurotunnel. After shuttling back and forth between England and rural France, Janine and her husband Mark decide to make the move to live in France full time and dedicate their time to restoring the run-down house that they bought. We learned to play chess, read a lot, and we have found hobbies and things we like doing together and separately so that we have “me” time. The French are besotted with baguettes, UNESCO says that eating a baguette is “a sensory experience” (someone at UNESCO really likes baguettes! You just have to take that as read, and put it down to par of the ritual of becoming grounded in another country. So when I saw the subtitle “In Pursuit of the Rural Dream”, I thought this would be the perfect read as I’m cooped up at home. We loved those new passports for several years; what a conversation piece to have those new photos (what a hassle that was to get them taken in Paris!

At the top of her career, Janine eventually decided to give up her job in London and move with her husband to live the good life in France. For the next few years, Marsh and her husband visited the house on weekends, beginning the monumental task of making it livable. It probably can’t be said enough but I am a sucker for countryside-themed stuff (I actually enjoyed Escape to the Country and was disappointed when it was taken off Netflix).

Le Bonaparte brasserie glows with red warmth in the fall and winter and is a great place to eat right in the heart of Saint-Germain-des-Près. Author Janine Marsh shares her charming journey to the good life dream--including the bon and not-so-bon things to consider!

It started as a fun way to keep friends up to date with my new life and the enormous renovation job we’d taken on. While getting to grips with the locals and la vie Française, and renovating her dilapidated new house, a building lacking the comforts of mains drainage, heating, or proper rooms, and with little money and less of a clue, she started to realize there was lot more to her new home than she could ever have imagined. Really enjoyed hearing how such a townie can be captured by the animal rescue bug and thumbs up for the way they both embraced this, great stories I can totally relate to! Drinking wine that was made on this same vineyard, or at least, in the same region, by a friendly neighbour. I look back with fondness at the many years spent living there, but a word of warning is not out of place.
