And Nurse With Wound’s famous NWW list, printed in the liner notes of Chance Meeting, is a guide to obscure avant-garde rock, jazz and noise music that is still fetishised by record collectors to this day. My only criticisms of the book are that (1) Keenan sets the bar pretty high in an excellent polemical introduction, but this discursive style is quickly abandoned for a more conventional rockumentary narrative. It’s fun to hang out with these mystics, though sometimes their drug-fueled religious fetishism can get a bit portentous, it’s never short of entertaining.

It's something of a history of a particular era and mindset in Great Britain, focusing on three bands in particular: Coil, Current 93, and Nurse With Wound. Finally bought and tackled this encyclopedic tome detailing the scene that sprung up around acts like Throbbing Gristle, Coil, Nurse With Wound and Current 93. A shame really - the 'esoteric underground' that Keenan focuses on is a deeply rich seam of myth and invention, far beneath the darkest extremes of British 'alternative' culture and even the transgressive norms of the 'Industrial' music scene they sprang from; the stories of the bands are correspondingly challenging and engaging.

A fascinatingly thorough document but the writing isn't always great and it often moves off into tangents it doesn't need to. I liked how the book would go back and forth between the artists and it was definitely interesting to learn more about the origins of Nurse With Wound and just anything and everything Coil (as I wasn't that familiar before reading). It's a tragedy reading it in hindsight of John Balance's death, since we can see the chaotic impulses and self-destructiveness in some of his behaviour and music, and we know how it all ends. Stapleton and Coil became mainly studio concerns after a couple of disastrous early shows (though Coil did perform live for a bit shortly before Balance's untimely death).
