Early parts of the book, where the existence of the aliens is unclear, are framed like an X-Files thriller where government agents are keeping tabs on a young woman because of what she thinks is her father's criminal activities. But in becoming an interpreter, she begins to realize that she has become the voice for a being she cannot ever truly know or understand, and starts to question who she's speaking for - and what future she's setting up for all of humanity. It might be that Obelus is less concerned with politeness and more just seizing a chance to sow dissension between Ampersand and his interpreter under the guise of civility by giving her a very grim appraisal of Ampersand's nature. For all of its drama and philosophical conundrums, Ellis's book is ultimately about the power of empathy and kindness in a universe that never has enough of either. Cora finds herself struggling for food, water, and clothing for most of the month or so the novel takes place over, let alone higher needs. Obelus", the antagonistic alien, is named after an historical typography mark that has evolved into the division sign (hinting that Obelus is actually divided from Ampersand), a dagger (an alternative footnote mark when an asterisk has already been used), and a commercial minus sign (which is a rarely used mathematical symbol used to denote a negative remainder of a division). While healing Cora, Ampersand tells her that he is bonded too closely with Obelus to allow Cora to kill him.Not a physical love, driven by hormones or sexual desire, but a love for who the other is, driven by a desire to see the other happy and safe.
