About this deal

Most locals preferred it to other nearby shelters because there was such a sense of community spirit. Nineteen Steps centers on Nellie Morris, an 18-year-old girl living with her parents and siblings in East London during the war. The prose is generally succinct and clean and it is a rather efficient read at 300 tightly plotted pages. Nothing special whatsoever in terms of language and writing style (I feel like I could’ve written it? The general public wants to be entertained by a book, they want to read a good story, and ultimately, whoever puts it together, I don’t think they really mind.

Nineteen Steps is a deeply affecting, mesmerizing page-turner inspired by the author's family history. This book has left a sour taste in my mouth and I’m struggling to get over how it’s been publicised. If you enjoyed Nineteen steps check out Kath Mcgurls other books, you have some brilliant reads to discover!Like the rest of the country, Nellie's witnessing the after effects of the Blitz- including the regular air raids that's still occuring.

The closest air raid shelter is the disused Bethnal Green Tube station, where many people were able to comfortably stay the night. She also starred in and produced the popular Netflix mystery film franchise Enola Holmes and its 2022 sequel Enola Holmes 2 . Writing Nineteen Steps has been a really special project for me,” Brown confirmed on Instagram when she first announced the book. I understand that the ideas came from Millie Bobby Brown and whilst also appreciating that the book will gain more sales with her name on it, I do believe that Kathleen McGurl deserves a lot of credit for this.

Reading this book I was very excited however the writing is very elementary and basic whilst dealing with difficult and emotional topics. Part three is a relatively short denouement that does a great job not ignoring or effacing the past trauma, but showing how someone can pick up the pieces and try to move forward. I loved Nellie, I absolutely adored Billy, when it comes to Ray-I’m not sure how I feel about him lol. She adores her younger siblings and her best friend, who lives next door, and she dreams of traveling the world.

The arrival of Ray, a handsome American airman stationed nearby, causes Nellie to question everything she thought she knew about her future. She regularly contributes to the Los Angeles Times, Rolling Stone, PureWow, and TripSavvy , and is the author of two books. Years after, it was revealed that the local council in Bethnal Green had asked permission to alter the entrance and put in a central handrail several times. Even the closest family can’t escape the devastation of war, and as the secrets and truth about that fateful night become clear, they threaten to tear Nellie – and those dearest to her – apart. I truly did not expect some of the more tragic twists in her personal story - often in similar stories they happen to secondary characters rather than primary characters - and by the time you get to part three, you'll be entirely wrung out. After a chance encounter with Ray, an American airman stationed nearby, Nellie becomes enchanted with the idea of a broader world.
