Taylor seems to think that the primary function of the gerundive is to express obligation or necessity — its main, almost sole, function in Greek. One question which may interest BMCR readers is to what extent the teaching of Latin in the upper forms of English schools has changed over this period, and in particular how the predominance of reading-based introductory course books (following the example of the Cambridge Latin Course) has affected the rigor with which the subject (and particularly the grammar) is taught at the higher levels. Useful easy practice sentences followed by unseen passages which become progressively longer and more challenging as the students progress. The next section introduces the translation and scansion of verse, and includes passages for unseen translation and comprehension at A2 standard in both prose and verse.

To conclude, as I have said, the fact that the book does not have any obvious or natural competitor will in itself ensure healthy sales, if mainly in those parts of the UK and the rest of the world that use the OCR specifications. Comics Beyond the Page in Latin America demonstrates the importance of studying how comics circulate in all manner of ways beyond print media. So it is perfectly understandable that one would want to make it as simple as possible for the learner.Grammar books and course books (and certain manuscripts and modern editions of texts) tend to conceal this diversity, a practice that goes back to and is due to the standardisation imposed on the language by the ancient grammarians. As a regular, and very satisfied, user of the original edition of this book, I was rather sceptical about whether a second edition was necessary.

Instead, what we have as far as the content is concerned is the first edition revised only to the extent of certain additions and removals needed to bring it into line with the new OCR specifications (for AS from 2017 (so of limited usefulness for 2017 candidates), for A level from 2018). This is not to say that the new additions are not welcome, nor that they will not be helpful to users. Finally there is a reference section including a summary of all constructions, a comprehensive grammar, and a general vocabulary of about 1200 Latin words. It is possible, I suppose, that such assistance will be given in the form of supplementary online materials. For example, the jussive subjunctive has two new examples (where there were none in the first edition): statim proficiscamur! This book, written by John Taylor, an experienced English schoolmaster and Head of Classics at Tonbridge School, is closely tied to the Latin syllabus prescribed by OCR, a leading examination board for the top two forms of English secondary schools.

The next section introduces the translation and scansion of verse, and includes passages for unseen translation and comprehension at A-level standard in both prose and verse. I thought that I understood what contribution Latin made to English, but re-visiting the subject through this book has enhanced my appreciation of the part that it has played in modern culture, etc. P. xi: Aspect is defined as “the expression of type of time”: it is, rather, an aspect of the action of the verb, unrelated to time.

Despite lack of funding and institutional support, not since the mid-twentieth century have comics in the region been so dynamic, so diverse and so engaged with pressing social and cultural issues.

Although designed as a continuation of Latin to GCSE, it is self-contained and can be used independently. Finally there is a reference section including a summary of all constructions, a comprehensive grammar, and a vocabulary of 1000 Latin words (with an additional list of 250 common poetic words for A2 verse passages). Some suggested translations seem less than helpful in the actual context, and other words are not glossed though used in a slightly unusual sense. The series of anthologies, also published by Bloomsbury, containing the set texts with accompanying notes and commentaries, is of limited usefulness too in this respect, especially as far as answering the types of questions that will be set on the prescribed texts is concerned. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. P. xii: Complement is defined as “another nominative word or phrase describing the subject”: this needs some reference to the verb “to be” and to the idea of completing. In the parlance of modern sociolinguistics, it is one of a number of ‘sociolects’ that comprise a single language system.
