It’s not a perfect game—not by a longshot—and many gamers might find it too simplistic or, considering it’s one versus all, not tactical enough. Kids will love hunting for One-Eyed Willy’s treasure with this Family Strategy Board Game from The Goonies range. The Goonies: Escape With One-Eyed Willy’s Rich Stuff follows the plot of the original 1985 Spielberg and Columbus classic The Goonies. Without spoiling anything specific (and since the miniatures that come with the game aren’t hidden information), the bosses include the Fratellis, a giant octopus, and the ghost of One-Eyed-Willie himself. In each adventure, the Goonies have an objective they will need to complete, but they might not know it to start!
But each team member can contribute something slightly different and it is key to get through any given situation. One final note that I think is important to stress, though our entire play of The Goonies we did not spot any issues. It doesn’t add any new mechanics, but it offers a new type of goal and new enemies, as well as a secret that you don’t find out about until after beating the last adventure (so don’t throw out the box until you do). Don’t forget to check out the rest of our amazing board games and activities here at The Entertainer.Last Spring, when I discovered that Funko Games was releasing a Goonies themed tabletop rpg board game, I knew it was something we had to get our hands on because Goonies and also because Funko Games is racking up a great reputation for fandom based games that are awesome tributes to their respective franchises. When a Goonie enters an unexplored room, the GM will setup the room, adding whatever tokens and foes are shown in the guide. For those who are familiar with some of the other media related to The Goonies, you’ll find some familiar references there as well. The stories are great and keep the players immersed in the Goonies world and into their chosen characters.
Distribute the remaining game material, like dice and tokens, to the remaining compartments of the tray. If players aren’t afraid to roleplay and immerse themselves into a character, it could feel more like one. There are also cards that relate to the specific adventure being played as well as reaction cards that can be played during the Goonies turn if a certain event occurs. Once you start playing, the game recreates many of the classic movie scenes and players will be reading off lines of dialogue right from the movie. He has worked as a local news reporter, columnist and currently hosts a comedy podcast about movies.
But for now, inside the box of surprises and delights, there will be multiple booklets, one for each character. Then, the GM will draw and play cards, most of which involve spawning new enemies or making rooms more hazardous. The book does a great job of explaining and simplifying the rules so that it’s quick to know what you are doing. Things that, sadly, have been a problem with the previous Coded Chronicles games, that I’m really glad didn’t happen in this one.
Young children with long attention spans shouldn’t have a problem playing, although they might require some hand holding on their turns.Looking at, picking up, and exploring each item will unlock new dialogue to read, and sometimes, new rooms, items and mysteries to explore. The terrain pieces and sort of room modifier pieces can be put together in trays within the box and it was fast enough for me to pull out any I needed when it came up, if it did. No matter which side of the game you control, the best part of The Goonies: Never Say Die is easily the way the theme is implemented. This is important to know — using the first hint on the table for any puzzle isn’t a bad thing and you don’t get penalized for it.
