Inspiration: This characterful frog was just crying out to be painted in watercolour and bright brusho.

Fade-resistant archival inks guarantee perfect colour reproduction that remains vibrant for decades even when exposed to strong light. I began mapping out the different colour areas, beginning with the palest: the slightly grey-green areas around the highlights on the frog’s skin. I left gaps wherever there were lighter colours and overlapped my paint on the transitions between colours.The painting looked disjointed as a result, but it also made it easier to assess how far to take the darkest areas and midtones within each of the other colour areas. This open edition print of my original watercolour painting is printed with archival non-fade inks on quality heavy 250gsm paper. I applied this new mix to all areas that were this colour or darker, while holding off from applying it to any areas that were lighter in tone.

I used the same mix with a size 0 brush to apply to the dark green parts of the frog’s skin, most of which were as a second layer (the layer underneath being dry). This artwork is crafted in the United Kingdom with artist-grade canvas, professionally hand-stretched, and stapled over pine-wood bars in Gallery Wrap style; a method artists use to present artwork in galleries. There were lots of variations of hue within the frog’s skin so I mixed a base of Permanent Sap Green and Winsor Blue (Green Shade), adding Winsor Lemon for yellow-greens, or Winsor Lemon and Cobalt Turquoise Light for the blue-greens.If you would like to use any of the web site images for personal use please contact me for permission. I used my size 000 brush to apply these mixes, making sure to stipple and leave gaps through to my original and previous layers lighter areas were required. I left the black line around the edge of the eye as I knew I’d want to darken the frog’s skin around that, and so it would be best added at the end so as to avoid it bleeding into the greens.The materials I use include acrylic paint, household paints, spray paint, glitter, screen printing, stencils, markers, mixed media collages of comic books, posters and found objects.
