About this deal

Sadly, that episode wasn’t part of the dedicatedly phantasmagorical precursor, Spooky, but there is a surfeit of similarly supernatural activity on show here – from the dizzily pretentious to the mind-bogglingly bizarre.

I remember one of the kid actors In that was Simon Schatzberger who later appeared in that classic Yellow Pages advert as the teenager who discovers a scratch on his parent’s expensive table after a wild party. She tells us of how her parents adopted the troubled orphaned girl Amy (Lucy Benjamin) and the impact it had on Elisabeth, particularly when her evil alter-ego Amelia makes herself known. At some point during the 1980s, Thames Television created an episode of children’s anthology series Dramarama that was so disturbing that we can still vaguely remember it to this day – something about a haunted house, time travel and a girl who could make pictures fall off walls just by pointing at them. Spooky aired shortly before the main series was broadcast, exploring the supernatural vein that would appear throughout Dramarama's run.The TVS episodes cannot be released commercially but some have appeared on YouTube, and STV itself placed all its episodes on YouTube in 2010, but has since removed them. I know, I thought that was odd too, That's why I asked here, There are quite a few others talking about this episode on IMDB Dramarama page, Apparently the episode was written by the late great Brian Glover (himself a former Wrestler). The Keeper', written by Alan Garner, was the final episode of the original 'Spooky' series of the long running Dramarama series, an anthology show for children.

Ok so my memory of watching these episodes as a 15 year old may have become rose tinted some 30 years later but there are few truly 'spooky' moments. All seems lost; but young Clare and the elegant, lively ghost of the ninth Earl unexpectedly team up to tackle the problem. ALSO INVOLVED A LOCKED UP SECRET ROOM WHICH HAD BEEN WALLED UP AT THE END OF THE CIVIL WAR FOR SOME REASON. The main run of Dramarama episodes included more than a few science fiction, horror and fantasy offerings ( Jack and the Computer (1983), Mr Stabs (1984), The Young Person’s Guide to Going Backwards in the World (1985), The Come-Uppance of Captain Katt (1986) and many others) but it was this initial run, subsequently released on DVD by the always wonderful Network, that provided some of the most memorable moments.During the info dump Peter mentions his grandmother being scared of this place and Sally notices that none of the window panes are broken.

It's a short little tale that uses many well worn tricks to build suspense - eerie acoustic instruments, predominantly a dulcimer, and a restless camera that's constantly circling and hovering just behind Peter and, particularly, Janet - but it must be remembered this is a show made for kids for whom many of these tricks of the trade would be new and also they are well worn because they work.Cinema Paradiso and all other Cinema Paradiso product and service names are trademarks of Pace-e-Solutions Limited or its affiliates. Another story, Granada's "Blackbird Singing in the Dead of Night" from 1988, was developed into the long-running series Children's Ward. It started with an Auction where the kids discover an old civil war helmet which starts glowing, or something to the limit of the LWT effects department. I have recently watched the first instalement of 'Shadows' which is some 7 years older but much more 'spooky' - so it's not my current age! Some of the episodes in the earlier Spooky series of horror stories were downright traumatic for any sensitive kid watching.

A videotape containing the episodes "Big T for Trouble", "Just Wild About Harry" and "Venchie" (all Tyne Tees productions) was released by Video Gems, c. Later accounts described him as a merman, and the incident appears to have encouraged the growth in wild men carvings on church fonts in the region. All seven episodes of Spooky were available on a now out-of-print Network DVD which is very much worth the time and effort it might take in tracking down.
