It is uncertain to what degree Avatars of Khaine are aware of their origin or how much of the original consciousness of Khaine they have. Models can move over enemy models when Falling Back, but you must take Desperate Escape tests for them before they do so (excluding models that are TITANIC or can FLY). Yvraine founded a new Aeldari kindred dedicated to the Whispering God's resurrection known as the Ynnari. The Firstborn and Primaris Space Marines of the xenos-hunting Deathwatch Chapter face the unbridled power of an Asuryani Avatar of Khaine.

All in all, a successful update of this iconic Aeldari centrepiece, and the optional heads and weapons create welcome opportunities for personalisation. But that’s only half of the truth, as there’ve been two Forge World exclusive Avatar models released around the 4th Edition Eldar codex, one of which I painted for my Iybraesil collection. GW does commit you pretty hard to the blood and fire theme, which is mostly being built into pieces without any of the obscured details being sculpted; given that we’ve had recent models like Abbadon with entire areas of sculpted detail that should, if built normally, never be seen, it might have been nice to do the same here and leave it a little more open so that hobbyists had some freedom to use the base model and switch up the theming.

Each model in that unit can then make an Advance move by moving a distance in inches less than or equal to this total, but no model can be moved within Engagement Range of enemy models. Moreover, as a combat unit, the Avatar is really only any good for fighting other big targets- mainly ones that it can kill in one go, because it has pretty weak defenses. Here at Goonhammer, we were lucky enough to receive the new Avatar of Khaine for review, including having two of them featured on Warhammer Community from our own Jack Hunter and Matthew Herrington. Looking back at the era of some centrepieces having two or three full frames it’s pretty cool to see what they can do now.

He’s made full use of his mastery of black and yellow with this roasting, scorched Avatar – we can feel the heat coming from his roaring maw. These bonuses only last while the Avatar is alive, so many players choose to leave him in their base. If a unit makes a Normal, Advance or Fall Back move, and every model in that unit ends that move within 3" of a friendly TRANSPORT model, they can embark within it.

TARGET: One unit from your army that is within 6" of that enemy unit and would be eligible to declare a charge against that enemy unit if it were your Charge phase.
