To set up the modes, you simply edit which cameras you want to be armed, and what you want them to trigger.

Motion detection worked very well, but I had to lower the sensitivity to avoid false alerts due to high winds. Overall, the Arlo Pro 2 is a brilliant performing smart security system for the more premium end of the market.There's a Sync button on the top of the camera, along with a button that opens the battery compartment at the rear.

It comprises of one or more wireless battery-powered cameras that talk via a dedicated Wi-Fi link to a hub. Image quality is generally very good – although a touch soft during the night – with footage saved to the free cloud storage. The Settings page includes account information and allows you to grant access to the system to friends and family. This siren can be armed for whenever motion is seen on the cameras, or you can manually turn it on during an emergency.

Let’s go over some of the hardware and software similarities so you won’t have to wonder what they have in common. The video quality on this camera is pretty good, a bit better than we’ve seen on other Arlo cameras, but not perfect.

Of our two test cameras, one was outside about 75 feet from the base station; we had a steady, reliable signal, though it had to travel through four thick exterior walls and two rooms (one filled with storage). It’s certainly not the cheapest way to keep an eye on your home, but it does offer a great quality picture, is reliable and offers a pretty good feature set without needing to sign up to the subscription service.

The company claims that this camera can illuminate up to 25 feet away, but I’m finding that at just five feet away it’s a bit difficult to decipher what’s going on in the screen. Having the built-in siren is a fantastic way of upping this from smart security system to fully fledged burglar alarm, which should send any intruders packing quick sharp. I have to give people a heads up, though: please make sure you have strong Wi-Fi before setting up this camera. Arlo is more generous than many when it comes to its free cloud storage, saving footage of any suspicious movement or sound for seven days, compared to Nest’s three hours and Hive’s 24 hours.
