Augustiner beer has been around for hundreds of years, originally produced by the Augustinian monks in their monastery near Munich’s cathedral. With a brewery dating back to 1328, Augustiner-Brau is the oldest brewer in Munich and the last remaining independent brewer in the historic city. Albans, Stevenage, Tring, Waltham Cross, Ware, Watford, Welham Green, Welwyn Garden City, Welwyn, Wheathampstead, Whitwell, Wormley. Crazy to think how long I’ve wanted to drink this specific beer, as Helles is one of my favorite styles.

One of the first Munich ales I tasted many years ago and it’s fantastic I can now have a bottle every other weekend or so. Hells (or Helles) simply means pale in German and describes the malty, easy-to-drink beer that is lovingly referred to as ‘liquid bread’. The owner, Niall, is always friendly, helpful, and does a lot to promote the local community and local brewers. Together with wheat beer this Muenchener Hell style is the most famous beer style in the Bavarian south. A nice touch was a personalised message from Niall suggesting which beer in my box was their favourite.

If you like a smooth Helles, with a decent head that lasts throughout, then I’d thoroughly recommend this. Augustiner Helles has a superb balance of richness and lightness, with a slight sweetness on first taste that isn’t cloying or lingering. I want to sell beer that the brewers have used their imagination and craft for, and chosen the best ingredients to make the best beers they can bursting with flavour and innovation. For some products supply can be inconsistent, whether that is at the brewery itself or how often we or its supplier imports it.
