About this deal

We’re incredibly proud of the worldwide range of respected users who believe in and rely upon our furniture restoration services including Harrods, Rolls Royce, Four Seasons Hotels, the NHS, and the Royal Air Force. If it doesn’t that means that more denibbing is required, and after that if it still isnt smooth then it probably hasn’t been as sanded as well as it should of. If you’ve used a finish that seals the wood like varnish, lacquer, shellac or polyurethane for example, I’d recommend spraying on a bit of water both to the project and to the abrasive paper and wet sanding – this forms a slurry on the surface and helps keep things smooth and removes any particles a little easier. Read more about the condition New: A brand-new, unused, unopened and undamaged item in original retail packaging (where packaging is applicable). I saw that denibbing is recommended with fiddes hardwax oil, how do you do this for a large area such as a floor?

Denibbing is the removal of “nibs” and imperfections from your finish, and it should be performed between each coat of any finish applied. Also I presume I would need to get a sanding block for the Abranet pads too as I currently just have a sander and nothing to do hand sanding with apart from my hands. I have heard that denibbing is a good thing to do after each coat of finish so I wanted to get some advice on where to get the pads from and what sort of grits? The pads work excellently when sanding wood, plastic, metal components as well as painted surfaces where their woven structure resists clogging.

It looks expensive and is dearer than when I bought mine on special at Screwfix, but it gives you a slightly cushioned velcro pad sized to the sheets (choice of two sizes) and a connection for a vacuum cleaner hose. Mirka Mirlon denibbing pads are especially designed for sanding surfaces prior to the application of finishing coats, primers or lacquers. And not sure about oil, but for paint and varnish, use a tack cloth before every coat/after denibbing (though I have heard that they can leave a residue that affects some finishes, though personally I've never noticed that). I use 0000 (four-noughts) wire wool (that's a grade finer than John, above) for applying the wax, but you can use a pan scourer (the green or white matty things, not Brillo pads, they are too coarse). You can use a high grit abrasive paper like 240, 320, 400, 500, 600 grit – it doesn’t really matter - any of those will do the job – if you use a lower grit like 240 you’ll do a little bit less work but your finish will be less smooth, if you use a higher 600 grit you’ll do a little more work but have smoother finish. The purpose of doing this between coats is to smooth down any raised grain or imperfections that have occurred from the first application.
