A wonderful and entertaining narrative which mixes up European history with contemporary America and gives the reader a wonderful experience.

The Counterfeit Candidate" may have a great premise, but it's ruined completely by a horrendous writing style and lack of attention to details. In plot terms, here we are presented with three juggernauts—completed by the bank raiders themselves—heading towards a three-way collision of major proportions, and one we get to see played out in spectacular fashion. The eminent bank was one of the oldest in Argentina and stood,imperiously, on Avenida Cabildo, deep in the heart of the fashionable Belgrano district of Buenos Aires in the north-east of the city. As the Russian Army closes in on the war-torn city, Adolf Hitler and Eva Braun take their own lives.

Senator John Franklin is set to become the next President of the United States and his father's deposit box is one of the ones in which the contents were stolen. Bormann, Braun, Eichmann, Hitler- they all feel cardboard characters, like the author just couldn't make them as real (and loathsome) as possible. An incredible historical truth stretching from Hitler’s infamous bunker in Berlin to the White House in Washington threatens the very heart and soul of American democracy. They wanted me to give it a new home and a new look and I was responsible for turning an old airfield hangar into a TV studio, which had to look different from any other show. Their plan includes splitting the boxes between them, each hiding their stash and not touching them for another year so as not to bring suspicion on themselves. For the previous 30 years I had directed many of the UK’s most popular and enduring shows, including Top Gear, A League of Their Own, The Grand Tour, Watchdog and Crimewatch.The plot of The Counterfeit Candidate is a great idea, and although dual timelines don't always work for me, I was intrigued enough to give it a try. I read about Russian leader Josef Stalin’s meeting with Churchill and Roosevelt at Potsdam in 1945, shortly after the end of World War Two (which is referenced in the prologue to The Counterfeit Candidate), where Stalin stated that he believed that Hitler had actually escaped from Berlin and had gone on the run, either in Spain or Argentina. This story is one of conspiracy, intrigue, crime, and moves between continents and time periods with facility.
