About this deal

Even if I did find myself sharing a table with somebody who suffered from such a crippling lack of self-esteem that they needed to pretend to thump everybody at Bristol 1350, then by all means, claim the V. But before the pandemic, I only had one monthly group that would be interested in social deduction games, and the hosts had their first kid last year.

One fun item that was included in the campaign was a link to Next Level Board Gaming who put together a 3D printed board, painted and ready for Bristol 1350. Each player chooses a character card, and the matching colored pawns are put in the bag to be drawn randomly. The scuffle that ensued was all hoarse oaths and panicked limbs as she was shunted with malice over the lip of the vessel to lie broken on the cobblestones receding in our wake. The dice have inset faces, and are simple to read or feel, for playing in lower light conditions, or players with poor eyesight. Bristol contains that right balance of incentives and clues to give both sides a chance of deducing secret diagnoses and attaining objectives. Luckily, the game doesn’t last all that long, so the periods of waiting dead players do aren’t nearly as bad as they can be in other games.

Shoulder to shoulder, elbow to elbow, like cattle we squirmed as we made our desperate pilgrimage through the rickety switchbacks of the doomed metropolis. When it seemed the universe had decided I was not to receive my package, Sammy defied nature itself to ensure it arrived and I even got a badge. In reality, it’s a selfish scramble to get yourself out of town as fast as possible without the plague, by any means necessary. Over the past two years, I’ve learned that the Hancocks are not afraid to completely destroy and reassemble their projects. If symptoms add up to 6 or more at any time after the initial turn, that player has the plague for the rest of the game, and their new objective is to make sure no healthy players win.

Every few months I got the chance to try the latest version of the fourth game in the Dark Cities Series, and each version was always wildly different from the last. The fact that a game about the Black Death elicits as much joy and laughter as this thing routinely does probably speaks volumes about myself and my friends.

The Alms expansion brings a new element to the game with coins that can confer immunity or instant infection from the plague.

Yeah, you can lose arms and legs, there are spinning floor blades and pit traps, lootable containers on the board. I appreciate that Facade Games has put forethought into ways to keep their game more replayable by offering what amount to “house rules” that people may want to use in future sessions.A Spanish Galleon floats nearby, and you’ve talked your crewmates into working together to steal all of its treasure. Will you be the hero who purges your town of witches, or will you be wrongly accused and hanged for witchcraft?
