Align the lens hood mounting mark (●) with the lens hood alignment mark ( ) as shown in Figure q and then rotate the hood ( w) until the ● mark is aligned with the lens hood lock mark (—○).

Image quality is pretty good too; results are sharp in the centre even wide open, and improve further on stopping down to F8, with the corners not far behind. Vignetting should not be a major concern in this lens class, as even professional lenses display some degree of vignetting.Here the 7-bladed aperture gives 14-point 'starburst' patterns, which some people apparently value quite highly. A true 'carry-anywhere' lens, the body weighs just 195 g, so you'll barely notice you're carrying it. The orientation is difficult since there are eight different versions of this lens (in five generations, the last three of which are either stabilized or non-stabilized). We consider falloff to start becoming a potential problem when the corner illumination falls more than 1 stop below the centre. It's not likely to break with normal use: I've made 10,000 shots or more with my non-VR 18-55mm pictured below.

It is an excellent feature in case you are shooting under challenging conditions, and the lens is hunting. Barrel distortion remains absent from 35mm until 55mm, where it turns to slight pincushion distortion.As a rule of thumb, you can use the following rule: the latest two generations of 18-55mm lenses that offer much better performance, have a button on the side of the lens barrel – this button is pushed to get the lens into the ready position.

This lens was updated to a mark II version with the release of the D40 in November 2006, featuring a new external design and smoother zoom operation. The third generation of the Nikkor 18-55mm was the first-ever lens in the Nikon line-up featuring the new AF-P technology. At the telephoto end results are similar, with the VR again offering about 2 stops of stabilisation, and giving a good chance of getting usable results at shutter speeds as low as 1/13 sec.This lens allows you to override autofocus by rotating the focus ring – at any time, regardless of whether autofocus is on or off. With no switches on the lens barrel itself, there’s no chance of accidentally changing settings when you want to take the shot.
