I think this is the definitive textbook for laypeople or human science students (psychology) to begin seriously studying neuroscience. Though the book may seem complex at times, it still provides a clear understanding of important brain functions such as metacognition and neuroplasticity. I was actually surprised and disappointed when the book suddenly ended with so many questions left unanswered -- but I guess that's how science goes. Although I hadn't thoroughly read through other textbooks for a fair comparison, I found the short stories and 'paths to discovery' to be exciting and inspiring, and they were sprinkled all throughout the textbook. A neuroanatomy atlas insert (Appendix to Chapter 7) provides large images that highlight the anatomy of the brain, along with a self-quiz that gives students an opportunity to check their understanding.
