About this deal

Metronome is a tense dystopian slow-burn thriller, set in the unspecified (but presumably near) future. The story starts out really interesting, I liked reading the flashbacks to their lies before this, but the world sounds crazy! They are dealing with their own trauma, and as they argue about what to do and how to survive, certain little frictions start to spiral. In the way Gormley chose those precise positions and locations at the University – what does that tell us – Watson as a verbal artist, places his characters where he chooses.

According to Wille, fire speeds things up for example, water slows things down; air gives focus and earth opens out. Are the islands we have today real, in all that we know, all that we can process, and benefit from, and use to our advantage? Even if that person is your soulmate and other half - with the last two years in a pandemic, it's easy to imagine the scene in lockdown where living in such close quarters with people really highlighted their habits and accelerated the annoyance factor on those. I cannot help but think that the premise of this novel is metastatic where even feelings about feelings are involved. At times dystopian, at others speculative fiction with a dollop of suspense thriller, this is an exceptional read. As she starts testing the limits of their prison, investigating ways she might escape, she is confronted by decisions that haunt her past.

We do our best to select used books that are in fantastic condition, however there may be some defects on the cover or pages. From the description is sounded spooky, adrenaline-rushing, and totally captivating – it did not disappoint! His use of language is nuanced and sensitive, with landscape writing especially a sensory highlight. Being with your partner may feel like rainbows and unicorns, but that doesn't mean you have a healthy, functioning relationship. In this controversial and exciting listen, Pollan explores caffeine’s power as the most-used drug in the world - and the only one we give to children (in soda pop) as a treat. Some choices might not be theirs to make, but the themes are very current, whether dystopian or not.

Me-tro-nome, the use of it in musical terms (Aina is a pianist with a mathematical brain, cunning and in control of her own life) and in timekeeping. The elegant cover was what drew me to the book, and it was such an engaging and, at times, challenging piece of speculative fiction. Survival on ‘The Limits ’ is key, based on 8-hourly pills from a timed clock dispensary that inadvertently tether them both to the island, to each other, their quest for freedom, and what they do to achieve it.

It focuses on Aina and Whitney, a couple who have been exiled on a remote island for the past twelve years for a crime they committed together.

Metronome by Tom Watson is mysterious, intriguing, and has more than a whiff of the dystopian about it. Metronome has the dystopia of Orwell clashing with the horror of Andrew Michael Hurley, but at the same time remaining original. Interesting then that Watson’s proof title for the book was ‘Not All that Is Hidden is Lost’ referencing the Hemingway theory again, where hidden could be taken to mean the future and lost being loss in a physical and emotional way.Sent to the island 12 years ago, there as punishment for committing a crime not immediately revealed to the reader, their survival relies upon pills which are dispensed from a box every eight hours. Although I occasionally got lost at parts of this story, there was something so deviously claustrophobic about their lives that I was intrigued throughout. As a couple, they are being punished by a government that has taken control of certain basic human choices, but I wanted to portray the after-effects of this on a micro level, within the relationship. However, I would have appreciated more details about the outside world and what events lead to their situation going dark.
