I cannot decide if it is a keeper for the long term, but I do think it is unique and am willing to show it to others. You must assign a villager with a hammer symbol on them, indicating that they are a trained builder as well as paying the cost in coin as indicated on the building you choose to construct. There maybe slight differences in colours, text and other presentation but the basic platform of the item will be what you purchased. You must collect food and equipment at town for long journeys to mysterious locales, making sure not to forget enough weapons to fight off bandits, living statues, and rusty robots! I have a couple of problems with Above and Below, its not that it’s a bad game, far from it, it’s fun, charming and beautiful. And to that end, Above and Below injects a bit of storytelling into what would otherwise be a fairly standard game. Anyone not already familiar with Above and Below will be very surprised with the narrative adventure decisions they can make. You’ll be given a choice and a lot will depend on which villagers you brought on the expedition, and who you’re willing to sacrifice to succeed. But just like real life, some villagers are the “Jack-of-all-trades” type, and a few others scream out to visit the vast network of underground caves.The Starting player assigns one or more of their worker tiles to an action space, unless they want to explore, in which case they need a minimum of two workers. Lastly, taking the Labor action allows you to generate coins for each villager using it, and you’ll need those coins for building. There are 8 different types of goods to be collected throughout the game and once collected, they can be committed to the advancement track. It melds choose your own adventure style storytelling with a straightforward set collection strategy game. Additionally, you can exert as many of your villagers as you want to increase their contribution by one, but putting the extra strain on their bodies means going to the injured area of your player board.

Players ends up using varying strategies to get ahead, and there's also a bit of luck introduced through dice rolling and the randomness that workers and buildings may appear.The player boards themselves show spaces for your worker tiles (active, exhausted and injured) as well as iconography for the actions you can take with each worker (explore, harvest, build, train and labour). When you do, you draw an explored cave card and roll a die, the result of which indicates which paragraph in the encounter book another player must read out to you. Looking back at the art he’s done for both his own games and for other designs, Laukat seems to enjoy deep, rich colors (particularly blue, green, and gold), and it’s on full display here, to great effect. However there are also plenty of choices to make and lots of nice systems in place to make this enjoyable for adult players as well.
