It kept my son interested (he loved all the sweary bits) and the story was interesting and definitely thrilling. In thinking about the significance of this year’s Carnegie winner, I’ve thought a lot about issues of representation: the way Lark made me feel seen, and the questions around disability representation it raised for me. They would also only drop off a case of books and leave us to run it – it was so lovely to have you on hand to chat to the children and recommend them books, as well as the small (but appreciated! This book is the fourth of a series, although I would recommend starting from the beginning this book also does well as a stand alone.

He has said that he read primarily non-fiction nature books when he was young, but when he was nine, a teacher gave him JRR Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings: "I don’t think I’d ever read a novel before, not even an Enid Blyton. Barrington Stoke) ‘Lark’ tells the story of two brothers and how a ‘gentle walk over the hills’ changes their lives forever. He continued writing for Barrington Stoke with four novellas in The Truth of Things series about northern working-class brothers Nicky and Kenny, the older of whom is learning disabled, who deal with a troubled home life and other challenges. As with the earlier books, along with the excitement of the adventure, our interest lies in the relationship between the brothers and the emotional frontiers they cross, together and separately. Whereas some of my Shadowing group found this a bit contradictory, I found this a very realistic note which highlights the way that caring for someone can often mean focusing on their needs first.

I haven't charted out my visits for the summer term, but I'm sure there are several in the south) and thanks so much for being so fantastic!

This book is about Nicky and Kenny; two brothers who go for a walk on the moors with their little and loyal dog, Tina.

Winner of the 2020 Carnegie Medal, this short novel is a beautifully written story of survival and brotherhood. For someone like Nicky, who has spent his whole life looking out for his sibling, the idea of ‘abandoning’ that sibling by predeceasing them is in itself a fear.
