Description

To accurately measure the effect various airflow configurations have on system temperature, we devised a simple testing procedure. A prolonged stress test is performed on the system using the various fan configurations set out above to ensure the system reaches its steady-state temperature. For cooling, the chassis comes with three 900 RPM Pure Wings 2 fans that use voltage control for regulation (3-pin). Although we’d prefer to see PWM control, at this price point the latter is far from expected. There aren’t many cases in this range that come with three quality fans included as standard, let alone a trio of PWM spinners. The top of the chassis can support up to a 240 mm radiator and the front a 360 mm unit. Another potential error with fan configuration would be to install all the system fans as intakes, so for this setup, we switched all four 120mm fans to intake making it difficult for warn air to exhaust out of the case. Pure Base 500DX White offers various options for installing up to five SSDs in total. Two can be installed for prominent viewing through the window panel. To hide any unwanted cables, the case offers excellent cable routing options.

Rotating 180° again to view the bottom, we see the removable bottom filter. This is a full-length filter even though the lower PSU intake mesh is only roughly half the length of the chassis. The four trapezoidal feet are fitted with a fair amount of rubber padding to ensure a stable platform. Bottom View Stripped Down

What other manufacturers might call a cable management bar has been dubbed an “SSD panel” by be quiet!. This panel is designed to hold two SSDs so that they’re visible from the interior of the case, but with their cables hidden behind a removable plastic insert bearing the be quiet! logo. As cable management bars go, this isn’t our favorite, but bear in mind that it is completely removable by loosening a single captive thumbscrew and that there are plenty of other SSD mounting locations. The main problem is that the cable gap along the edge of the panel routes cables at a right angle. That’s great for boards that have their 24-pin power connectors pointing out from the edge of the board, like EVGA’s Dark series, but it makes it more difficult to route cables into other things, like normally-oriented 24-pin connectors or PCIe power cables. There are also no cable tie points anywhere on the SSD panel, which is something of a missed opportunity, although there are plenty elsewhere. Accounting for the space taken up by noise-damping foam, there’s about 2cm of clearance between the motherboard tray and the side panel for routing cables. ARGB LEDs offer multiple colors and modes to individualize the look of the case from the inside as well as from the outside. You can optionally synchronize lighting with your motherboard or ARGB controller.

For cooling, it's possible to install up to three 120 mm or two 140 mm fans on the front, two 120 mm or 140 mm fans up top, and a single 120 mm or 140 mm blower on the rear. Radiator support includes up to 280 mm up top and up to 360 mm (or 280 mm for 140 mm fans) on the front. Regardless of what CPU you choose, you'll likely find it hard to run into cooling issues as far as the case is concerned. A kiváló minőségű, teljes üveg oldallap belátást enged a PC belsejébe az alkatrészekre. Az ablak edzett, színezett üvegből készül, feketére festett szegélyekkel. A Pure Base 500DX házba többféle módon akár öt darab SSD is beépíthető. Kettő beszerelhető úgy, hogy hangsúlyosan látható legyen az oldalablakon keresztül. A nemkívánatos kábelek elrejtéséhez a ház kiváló kábelelvezetési lehetőségeket biztosít.Moving on from cooling, let's talk over the rest of the spec sheet that builders will need to bear in mind. You've got the usual 7 PCI slot expansion bars, two HDD mounts in a removable cage, alongside five SSD mount options. Dust filters are located on the top, bottom, and front. GPU and CPU cooler clearance is in line with other mid-tower PC cases and should fit most cards and crazy big coolers. The Pure Base models are advertised to be “the best combination of silence and flexibility features for a good price”. Based on this review, it is easy to determine that be quiet! has delivered on this statement. With the full front mesh panel and three Pure Wings 2 fans, the 500DX has nailed the proper mixture of adequate airflow while maintaining relative silence. Even though there is very little difference in component temperature in the positive, negative and balanced configurations, we would expect an airflow configuration leaning slightly towards positive pressure may be optimal for dust build-up, in a negative configuration dust particles could be drawn into the system through any gaps in the chassis such as the empty PCIe slots or just any other panel gaps. We’ll start with only the 500-series be quiet! cases, then move on to the comparative charts. The baseline CPU temperature during the first torture test was 49 degrees Celsius over ambient, which only dropped to 45 degrees dT with the removal of the front panel (while leaving the front and top filters in place). The two exhaust fans in the rear of the case are the ones primarily responsible for CPU cooling, and their efficacy isn’t directly dependent on the front panel. Removing just the optional filters from the front and top of the case lowered CPU dT to 47 degrees, not quite as good as removing a whole panel, but much more practical for daily use. Adding another front intake fan to the case had no significant impact on CPU thermals versus baseline for this specific build configuration. The original 500 had a baseline CPU temperature of 66 degrees, massively increased over the DX and hot enough to cause some brief and minor throttling as the logged CPU temperature brushed up against the 100-degree mark. Testing with the mesh top filter instead had a slightly better result with a 64C dT average. Emulating the DX’s three-fan configuration helped slightly more and pushed the average down to 58 degrees over ambient. That’s still much, much worse than baseline for the DX--the front panel really does make the difference. We wouldn’t recommend the non-DX. For over two decades of PC building, I have always preferred a balanced airflow configuration inside a PC case. However, I have never actually run any prolonged tests to find out whether this airflow method is the optimal setup for component temperature, or whether different fan configurations have any noticeable effect on system temperature at all.

As before, the case offers half-a-dozen potential fan-mount locations. The front accommodates up to two 140s or three 120s, there's room for either two 120s or two 140s in the roof, and either a 120 or 140 in the rear. In terms of liquid-cooling support, the arrangement allows for up to a 240mm radiator up top, or up to a 360mm in the front, though you will need to remove the hard-disk cage to make the latter possible. According to Be Quiet's Pure Base 500DX spec list, there's room to mount up to five 2.5-inch drives in this case, along with two 3.5-inch drives, with one overlapping bay between the two types. The two 3.5-inch drives get mounted at the bottom of the case in a small removable hard drive cage. As for the 2.5-inch drives, two of these can be mounted directly behind the motherboard mounting tray, and two more can be installed at the front of the case. The fifth 2.5-inch mount is located inside of the hard drive cage, and using it takes up one of the 3.5-inch drive-mounting locations. We then compared the data from the balanced pressure configuration and tested against two poor fan setups that a novice PC builder could unknowingly configure their system in, to see how much this affects the component temperatures inside the system. The HDD cage is removable, and you'll need to do so to fit a 360 mm radiator upfront, but so too is the rear shield with be quiet! branding, just in case you wish to fit something else in its place. Note that this shield also acts as an SSD mount for two drives, so if you have a few storage devices to install, you may want to leave it be. Proceeding to the top of the right side, we can count four hook and pile cable straps. These can be attached to any of the 15 attachment points. Towards the front is the removable SSD/Cable hiding tray. This is retained by a single captive thumbscrew at the top and a pair of tabs that fit into slots in the motherboard tray. Covering the CPU cut-out is the other SSD tray. This one is secured in the same fashion and both trays can hold a pair of 2.5″ SSD’s.
