Description

Topics covered include syncopation, which is essential to becoming a good jazz player, and finger independence, which is important for any pianist. While the exercises and pieces in the book are relatively simple, they are still only appropriate for pianists who have been learning for at least one year. While there is no definitive list of jazz standards, there are certain songs that are widely performed by musicians across all genres. Some of the most popular standards include “All the Things You Are,”“Body and Soul,” and “Autumn Leaves.”

Mark Levine’s Jazz Piano Book is a great jazz piano classic. It is probably the best known jazz piano book of all time, a masterpiece for the study of jazz harmony and improvisation.First, make sure you have a good understanding of the theory behind jazz piano. This will give you a solid foundation on which to build your skills. Then, listen to as much jazz piano as you can. Not only will this help you better understand the style, but it will also give you some ideas to work with when you’re practicing. Jazz piano is a complex and nuanced art form, and there are many advanced techniques that pianists can use to create a distinctive sound.

Of the three, Levine's book is by far my least favorite, and it is the least useful for my purposes. It reads as schematic and not very well thought out, and feels like a reference work, or even more so, like a collection of notes. He was also a student of Charles Wilcoxon.Kenny Washington, the New York drummer, is another current prominent advocate of Wilcoxon’s method. Wilcoxon’s books were originally hand-written teaching aids, often dedicated to specific students. The Art of Bop Drumming by John Riley
