If you want a compact camera that produces great quality photos without the hassle of changing lenses, there are plenty of choices available for every budget. The XP140 is very much a point-and-shoot camera, with no manual controls aside from exposure compensation.

This is one of the cheapest rugged cameras on the market, but despite that you get a very decent range of tough credentials. The other two buttons on the top plate, framed by small industrial looking screws either side that subtly reinforce the toughened prowess of this model, are a marginally raised on/off button that's marked as such, plus a slightly recessed red record button self-evidently illustrated with a graphic for a movie camera. As you can see, the action at this low frame rate is far from smooth so if you plan to shoot moving subjects, and with video that’s pretty much a given, you’ll get much better results with one of the 1080p modes. Users need to download the free “FUJIFILM Camera Remote" app to their smartphone or tablet device to easily transfer photos and videos. Find out how to pack for a travel photography trip, carry your gear safely while meeting airline regulations.

But before you get too excited about that, I’ll tell you straight away that with a maximum 15fps frame rate, you won’t be using it to capture action footage, or much else for that matter. Although the Fuji XP140 offers up to 4K-video capture, the highest frame rate in this setting is a modest 15fps.

As before, the Finepix XP140 is equipped with WiFi and Bluetooth and can transfer photos to you phone in the background while you shoot. com is a trading name of Jessops Europe Limited, a company registered in England and Wales, company number 08384909. The good news is that the XP140 retains the 1080/50/60p and 720/50/60p and adds 24fps video at 1080 and 720 resolutions in addition to a new square video mode. That all said, you might want to consider the XP130 for an even bigger bargain (it only really lacks 4K video and scene recognition) or a more advanced camera like the Olympus TG-6 if you need manual control, Raw shooting, macro shots and usable 4K footage.

The Panasonic Lumix FT7 is a new flagship tough camera that is waterproof down to a depth of 31 meters / 102 feet.

Editorial independence means being able to give an unbiased verdict about a product or company, with the avoidance of conflicts of interest. Yes, we may lose a little definition and there's some visible softening at the extreme edges of frame when shooting at maximum wide angle, but in truth this is only really noticeable if you're actively looking for such instances. megapixel back-illuminated CMOS sensor and FUJINON's 5x optical image stabilized zoom lens starting from 28mm which can be doubled to 10x using Fujifilm's Intelligent Digital Zoom technology. There's a small playback button to view your images and a 4-way controller which also allows quick access to a function of your choice, flash settings, self timer settings, exposure compensation and the ability to delete images. The XP140 is now capable of movie recording in 4K quality for the first time in its series' history.

Drop down therefore to Full HD resolution if you want the standard 30fps rate for smoother footage, which makes the inclusion of 4K here – which the manufacturer trumpets as being the feature's first inclusion in the series of its toughened cameras – seem more like an exercise in box ticking than anything else. Everything is very ergonomic although those with larger hands may find the buttons fiddly, especially zoom in/out buttons. The Fujifilm XP140 has the same solid set of core features as the previous models with a few handy improvements. The Fujifilm FinePix XP140's 5x zoom lens achieves a maximum wide-angle focal length equivalent to 28mm, and can zoom in to 140mm (in 35mm-camera terms). On the Fujifilm Finepix XP140 we get a 5x optical zoom, controlled, instead of via the usual rocker switch, by alternating between a thumb press of buttons marked 'W' (wide-angle) and 'T' (telephoto). To access this you need to depress the button in the middle of the gripped wheel and turn it to minimise the chances of accidental opening while the camera is wet.
