You definitely have to adjust the day to allow for the increased travel time, but once I made the trip I wondered why I hadn't done so before.

I have worn out many a pair of walking sandals in Brooklyn, New Paltz/upstate NY and all over Essex and London, England. This is quite a "light" book, although all the benefits presented are supported by scientific evidence. Each chapter talks about a different approach to walking and then talks about specific items you might need for your walk.Some of the ways I want to walk include: at night, backward, as meditation, sketching, within an hour of rising, and after eating. I didn't completely finish this because it was due back to the library but I read enough to know that in my case, it was preaching to the choir. Streets carefully breaks down the psychological and physical benefits of [walking], and makes a solid case that getting some movement in outside can help one “appreciate the exquisitely complicated and beautiful world we inhabit.

Each chapter also includes a good balance of personal anecdotes and scientific studies to hold the reader's attention and make a convincing argument. Inspirational, backed by science, illuminated with human anecdote, and bolstered with how-to tips, 52 Ways to Walk will inspire, challenge, support, and encourage everyone to become more ambitious with their walking practice, revealing how walking may be the best-kept secret of the supremely healthy and happy, the creative and well-slept–those with the best posture and sharpest memories. I found this book by listening to an interview with the author, Annabel Streets, on the Mind Body Green podcast. I will be honest, the primary reason I loved this book is because the science supports everything I've already concluded from my own walking experience (I knew it! Though the prose glides right along, a reader may find that it takes her quite a long time to finish this book due to the fact that every time she picks it up she will be inspired to put it down and go for a yomp.

It has numerous tips on how to walk in every kind of weather and the value of walking in the cold, wind, rain, snow, with poles, without them, nature walks, solitary walks, group walks, map walks, etc. PLUS, it gave me new ways to explore the various benefits available through a diverse walking repertoire.
