Trigger warnings:violence, cheating, death, mass-shooting, kidnapping; references to: degenerative disease, death of a family member, suicide; mentions of: suicidal thoughts, incest, sacrifice. The concept of The Atlas Six, whilst not particularly original, is done in such a beautiful manner that it feels entirely unique. Olivie Blake takes the premise of a lethal competition to new heights as she weaves it into a dark academia story full of magic and secrets.

Writing: So much better than I expected. Detailed and studious, yet accessible and completely captivating. In some highly distant, extremely generous sense, Libby could see how that was understandable. Nico was enormously likable, unfairly so, and no matter how clever or talented Libby was, students and faculty alike preferred Nico to her. Whatever gift it was he had, it was like Midas’ touch. Nico had an effortless ability to turn nonsense into gold, more a reflex than a skill, and Libby, a gifted academic, had never been able to learn it. Nico’s brand of easy charm had no metric for study, no identifiable markers of finesse.

The character dynamics were so fun to read about too. As mentioned in the blurb, they’re rivals but who also have to form alliances if they want to get through the initiation into the society. Add in the fact they’re all ambitious academics who want to get out on top, and you can guess what kind of chaos will ensue. Olivie has penned several indie SFF projects, including the webtoon Clara and the Devil with illustrator Little Chmura and the viral Atlas series. As Follmuth, her young adult rom-com My Mechanical Romance releases May 2022. The story centers on the mysterious Alexandrian Society, a secretive body that serves as caretakers of lost knowledge from the greatest civilizations of antiquity (such as the library that gives the group its name). Every 10 years, the group recruits six of the most powerful young magic users (known in this world as medeians, not to be confused with simple witches!) to join their ranks, but only after an initiation period that requires them to live, study, and learn to survive together. The Alexandrian Society, caretakers of lost knowledge from the greatest civilizations of antiquity, are the foremost secret society of magical academicians in the world. Those who earn a place among the Alexandrians will secure a life of wealth, power, and prestige beyond their wildest dreams, and each decade, only the six most uniquely talented magicians are selected to be considered for initiation.

There wasn’t a lot of natural life […] but what did exist – the decorative plants sitting idly in the corners, handfuls of cut flowers in vases meant for sympathy – had crept towards her infant form like nervous children, anxious and yearning and fearful of death” Since the comment was clearly designed to annoy her, Libby made the exemplary decision to peer into the crowd in lieu of answering. The auditorium was fuller than she’d ever seen it, the vista of graduates and their families stretching up to the balcony seats and frothing out into the vestibule. Is there some knowledge that should truly be forbidden, possibly even destroyed? Or should all information be freely available, to allow everyone to make their own choices? Are there abilities—or people—who simply should not exist because they are too dangerous to the world? And if that’s the case, who makes those decisions about potentially life and death access? The Atlas Six doesn’t offer us any easy answers, but it certainly is an enjoyable ride. Honestly, this again. “You do realize your obsession with my boyfriend is childish, don’t you, Varona? It’s beneath you.”Each decade, six magicians are invited to compete for an incredible prize — a place within the secretive Alexandrian Society. Its custodians guard knowledge from ancient civilisations, and enjoy incredible power. This time, the chosen few are…

Incandescence aside, this was to be a very different sort of day, as it was finally going to be the last of them. Barring any accidental encounters, which Libby was certain they’d both furiously ignore—Manhattan was a big place, after all, with plenty of people ravenously avoiding each other—she and Nico were finally going their separate ways, and she would never have to work with Nico de Varona again. She’d practically burst into song over it that morning, which her boyfriend, Ezra, presumed to be the consequence of the occasion’s more immediate matters: either graduating top of her class (tied with Nico, but there was no use focusing on that), or delivering the NYUMA valedictory speech. Neither accolade was anything to scoff at, obviously, but the more enticing prospect was the newness of the era approaching.Callum Nova: an insanely rich pretty boy who could bring about the end of the world. He need only ask. (Publisher). Apr 21 2022 The Atlas six by Olivie Blake Pan Macmillan, 2022. ISBN: 9781529095241. (Age: Adult) Recommended for adults.
