One of Browns traits was being a tad cocky, which probably helped him get the gigs and into gigs he was employed to earn his keep.

By 2007, the magazine was taking its staff on a straight pride march around London under the editorship of Martin Daubney, now deputy leader of Laurence Fox’s Reclaim party. A Serving of Crime with a Difference - You May Just Discover Something Unique, Different, or Unusual in These 20 Crime Novels.Reading it is a bit like being strapped into the passenger seat of a speeding sports car – you can feel the G-force of that decade’s optimism and indulgence, and there isn’t always much time for reflection along the way. Join our community to get personalised book suggestions, extracts straight to your inbox, 10% off RRPs, and to change children’s lives. It’s about, celebrities, football, drugs, a crisps World Cup, travelling, partying and a dose of self reflection. Occasionally, I slip outside to the fleshpots of Soho to attend a premiere or appear as guest on daytime television.

And I think the Loaded staff might be quite surprised to read this, because my mood swings back then were like a sail in a squall.Brown at least displays self-awareness throughout, yet still finds space to disingenuously fill his pages with accolades whilst feigning disinterest. These days he’s a bit more business-savy than your average zinester but, as is the way with any successful creative type, it only works if you are ‘for real’ and the ‘art’ comes first and foremost. Name dropping and bar-propping, the loaded founder’s memoir is a sometimes enjoyable, but more often obnoxious tribute to excess. In a very short space of time Loaded went from being a magazine that the industry thought was a joke, to selling half a million copies an issue. I can imagine popular authors get inundated with enquiries but the authors popularity on this social media platform is fledgling.

James records all of this with candour, sensitivity and an unflinching eye for detail, which means that Animal House is both uproariously funny and oddly sobering too. At first this book seemed like it was right up my street, especially given that I had actually completed some work experience as a late teenager at Loaded magazine. The fact he read it in such a conversational way was a huge bonus and made you feel part of a conversation. But he still buzzes with energy and ideas, and I get the sense that there are only so many blackberries he can pick before he gets the publishing itch again, and a company will have to decide whether or not he’s worth the risk. Due to my lack of knowledge I'd always assumed that fanzine's were poorly circulated and of generally poor quality so to hear James' story of how his fanzine and the large network of fanzine creators in the UK was so popular it was circulated via post and appeared on John Peel's Radio 1 show was insightful. The first few chapters reeled me in in excited anticipation, so I decided to reach out to the author and applaud him on a good read, and to see if he may have remembered me (I wasn't expecting him to by the way but I wanted to show support). Quite often that was because something else had happened in my life in between and, instead of being able to understand how to process that, I would take it out on the next person. The Financial Times and its journalism are subject to a self-regulation regime under the FT Editorial Code of Practice. It is done seamlessly, giving us an taste of his formative years and simultaneously quenching the thirst of those of us keen to drink in his anecdotes about Pop Will Eat Itself, The Three Johns and The Redskins. In many ways publishing is a less exciting place these days, but Brown says that’s only if you look at magazines rather than the abundance of creativity on social media platforms such as Twitter and TikTok.
