Let’s start with looking at the methods available to automate your shades yourself. There is some variance here depending on if you have curtains, roller blinds, or some other type like Venetian or vertical blinds. Roller Motors The mini series, although slower, is designed to fit inside the cardboard roller typical of most retail rolller style shades that you may have already installed. The ability to retrofit existing shades with the 'mini' can save you a lot of money. Our 'mini' may be the smallest tubular motor available anywhere, and it has many other potential applications due to its small size. For the Battery series, use the Mini or Standard series designations, depending on which one you choose.

Our standard motors are designed to fit Rollease 1.5" tubing, but larger blinds and shades sometimes require a larger size, such as 2.5". If you’re looking at roller blinds, you can potentially install powered rollers where the motor sits inside the tube. There are DIY options for these, but you’ll be looking at more installation effort than most other cases as you’ll have to remove and modify the rollers. Additionally, there aren’t many of these DIY motors that have any kind of smart home support, but I’ve managed to locate a couple of viable options. Tilt Motors Obviously if you don’t have a ZigBee hub then this one is a non-starter, but using Zigbee does offer some significant benefits in terms of reliability and battery life. Our Maxi series uses 2.5" tubing (63mm OD) and can lift very large shades and blinds. In this article, we'll show you the various components; these heavy duty motors are really not significantly different from our standard series (including the same radio protocol), except that everything is larger, and the lift capacity is much higher.Note that the motors can be permanently programmed (with the remote) to operate normally in either direction, so you can choose whichever end you prefer (see blind and shade motor programming instructions). I’ve been looking at a few smart blind motor options; from motors connected directly in the blind tube & other external blind chain motors. This blind motor seemed the best and most flexible option available. I bought one blind motor at fist, but have ended up buying 6 so far… But this was after sorting out a few ‘user manual’ niggles (the instructions should say ‘Set Up the Chain Motor First’ including the ‘OPEN & CLOSE’ settings. ONLY set up the SMART APP and CONNECT the Blind Motor after you have set up the Chain Motor to work through the buttons on the motor unit. Apart from that niggle everything has been fine setting up the Smart Blind Motor. The only thing to be aware of is that you will most likely have to ‘cut’ and re-join the blind chain, as the Chain Motor needs the blind chain to be ‘tight’ to work. But the ‘connectors’ to reconnect the chain together doesn’t go through the chain motor ‘cog’ (or the main Cog of the blind, might be different with the blind you have)- I have tried various chain ‘connectors’. So to get over this problem, I MELT the blind chain beads; joining one to another. This works fine. If a little fiddly. BLIND MOTOR POSITION: I tried various positions for the motor. on the wall I found straight down 3-4cn from top of windowsill the best place. My blinds are inside the window space. SMART/WIIFI – Every easy, and works well, I use the ‘automation’ so blinds close at sunset and open at sunrise and the blinds work well with ALEXA and Google Home. Plus the remotes you can buy separately work easily. Not having on board controls is the biggest downside to the Soma Smart Shades. While you can fully automate the blinds with the apps own schedules or your smart home, ad-hoc changes need to be done via the app, which may not be convenient for some family members.

You can manually charge the internal battery via USB when required, plug it into a power outlet if you have one handy, or use the included window mount solar panel accessory to keep it topped up. Potential Concerns

The standard series is designed to work in most situations with almost any window size where you want to install a motorized blind or shade with remote control. There are two models in this series, with different gearing and lift capacities: 6 lb (2.7 kg) @ 34 rpm and 12 lb (5.5 kg) @ 28 rpm. Our electric headrail is powered by a Somfy motor, the world leader in powered blind products. A range of remote handsets, wireless wall switches and timers are available to provide your preferred control option.
