Mannfred von Carstein’s endless pursuit of power has made his vampiric vassals ambitious and arrogant. The Legion of Night prefer to use hordes of the undead to slow the enemy down and act as bait, while powerful vampires sweep in to claim glory once they sense an easy kill. In the centuries later, vast lineages formed, splitting into various dynasties and empires of distinct cultures. Some cherished the deathly powers of Nagash, revering him as a god to be worshipped, while others rejected him, only resentfully supporting his deathly crusade as they were forever cursed to do. All, however, conspired against one another, currying favour with those who would help them, before betraying any ally that stood as an obstacle to undead hegemony.

While these abilities are available for all Soulblight armies, the choice of your army’s ‘Cursed Bloodline’ will open even more experimental possibilities. All have some gameplay quirk that ties to their thematic origins, and will influence your army’s playstyle. Legion of the Night, for instance, grants +1 to your save rolls for all Deadwalker and Deathrattle units in the first turn, and lets you keep half your units to deploy as reserves. It’s a great option if you like malleable tactical plays, and want to start the battle one foot forward. A hideous transformation turned him into a hybrid monster that ravages the landscape with unfettered rage. Hardly the skilled warrior he once was, tearing and clawing are all he knows now.

One thing I didn't mention in the write up is their fantastic debuff aura reducing the rend of nearby units. This is absolutely one of the biggest reasons to run them, and is amazing support for blood knights especially. Between that, their speed, their combat ability, and being a monster, you can basically read 'undeniable impulse' in the absolute worst case way - ie you can take it as 'this model may not use command abilities ever, with no positive trade off at all' - and they'll still be a good and strong unit option. My frustration with Vengorian rules is entirely them being the closest available alternative to the absent mounted vampire lord (unless your opponent allows anvil of apotheosis), while really not quite working as that. If you can set that aside and just view them as entirely their own thing - or maybe as an alternative to the long gone Vampire Lord on Abyssal Terror - then they really are very good.

But she’s no willing servant. A begrudging follower of Nagash, she’s always looking to usurp his godly powers, and position herself as the single ruler of Death. The Soulblight curse forever compels her loyalty to the Supreme Lord of Undeath, and ensures her attempts to break free from his thrall are doomed to failure. Taking a portion of Shyish for herself, she’s built an empire that follows her will, replete with a devoted population to do her bidding. If you like armies full of massive fiends, like the incredible Lauka Vai we recently revealed during Warhammer Fest, you can’t go wrong with the Avengorii. They’re even able to take Terrorgheists and Zombie Dragons as battleline units… feel free to imagine the look on your opponent’s face.

If you’re interested in a broader overview of the fantastical factions that call the Mortal Realms home, have a read of our Age of Sigmar armies guide. But if the sight of immortal fiends doesn’t shake your bones, then read on. Pieminams ir arī cits bumbierveida hibrīd – Borsalina F1, Īpašības līdzīgas Rosamunda F1, tikvien augļi sarkanā krāsā When you’re an immortal being suffused with potent death magic, learning to summon the dead is an appropriate hobby to take up – especially if you want to grow your undead horde. Soulblight Gravelords earned their name by raising massive armies of the dead to fight alongside them. Lauka Vai, Mother of Nightmares has joined the opposing side after falling into primordial ooze after a run in with a Tzeentchian Sorcerer. The once courageous vampire-knight now suffers a strong thirst for blood and fits of rage. Already having slain her fellow knights, the Mother of Nightmares can turn on anyone at any point.

A fan-favourite of the Vampire Counts, Mannfred von Carstein is Age of Sigmar’s take on the classic Transylvanian, Bram Stoker-esque vampire lord. The Mortarch of Night, he has the usual Soulblight penchant for scheming, conspiring, and conniving, but is the closest anyone will likely get to becoming the Undying King’s right-hand man. A brutal ruler and effective warlord, Mannfred is Nagash’s ace in the hole when it comes to territorial conquest.

A new (if very old) face is Radukar’s great great (we don’t really know how many greats) grandmother (grandsire?), Belladamma Volga. Clad in luxurious, somewhat slav-esque garb, and furs, and riding a huge Dire Wolf side-saddle, she’s a deeply unnerving combination of apparent physical frailty, and huge implicit threat, sat on top of what has to be one of Age of Sigmar’s simplest, but finest, scenic character bases yet.
