The system promotes careful observation, early anticipation and planning, and a systematic use of the controls to achieve maximum machine stability. It is a systematic way of dealing with an unpredictable environment. It is central to Motorcycle Roadcraft, drawing together all other riding skills in a coordinated response to road and traffic conditions. It gives you the time to select the best position, speed and gear to negotiate the hazards safely and efficiently. A useful aid to remember the System of Motorcycle Control is the mnemonic IPSGA. This stands for: Robin Gwinnett, Training Manager, South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust and Chair, Driver Training Advisory Group (NHS Ambulance) Interactive quizzes - a the end of each section there are interactive quizzes for the students to take and test themselves. Since 1955, Roadcraft has been developed and updated by leading experts. Several new editions have been published between 1960 and 2013, each incorporating changes in legislation and improvements in driving practice while retaining the best of the previous editions. In 1965, the first edition of Motorcycle Roadcraft was published, followed by further editions between 1973 and 2013. Understand the four-phase system of motorcycle control and how you can apply it to all riding situations, including reducing the risks that riders face from the actions of other road users. The new versions include a revised chapter on overtaking – with separate sections on passing stationary vehicles, single stage overtakes and multi-stage overtakes – and new explanations of advanced concepts, such as limit points on left-hand bends. More detail can be found in HTBABR p26 and Roadcraft p27. What happens once I’ve passed my Advanced Test? The aim of Motorcycle Roadcraft is to improve your riding ability. Your safety and that of other road users depends on your awareness of what’s happening around you and your ability to control the position and speed of your machine relative to everything else on the road. A collision or even a near miss can be the result of a lapse in riding skill. Motorcycle Roadcraft aims to help you become a better rider by increasing your awareness of all the factors that affect your riding – your own capabilities, the characteristics of your machine, and the road and traffic conditions, including the actions of other road users that can put you at risk. The Roadcraft system of car control has been used for over 75 years by police drivers. It is an integral part of the Roadcraft driver and rider handbooks, and remains unchanged to this day.

From 1994, the Police Foundation took responsibility for producing Roadcraft, widening the range to include Towing Roadcraft (2000), Fleetcraft(2001) a DVD edition, Roadcraft: the Police Driver's Course in Advanced Driving(2005) and Roadcraft Online(2017).
