He was to carry the flag of his troop to the party’s national rally at Nuremberg. He was overjoyed. But when he returned we hardly dared trust our eyes. He looked tired, and on his face lay a great disappointment. We did not expect an explanation, but gradually we learned that the youth movement which had been held up to him as an ideal image was in reality something totally different from what he had imagined the Hitler Youth to be. Their drill and uniformity had been extended into every sphere of personal life. But he had always believed that every boy should develop his own special talents. Thus through his imagination, his ingenuity, his unique personality, each member could have enriched the group. But in Nuremberg everything had been done according to the same mold. There had been talk, day and night, about loyalty. But what was the keystone of all loyalty if not to be true to oneself? My God! There was a mighty upheaval taking place in Hans. Saturday 2nd December 2023, 12pm until 3pm* - 'East Lancs Connection' outreach on 15 Minute Cities. John submitted all this evidence in a report to a higher power within the university, with the hopes he could stop the administration from targeting him for “wrongthink.” Because of this report he’d made, they assembled an entire team of administrators to monitor John’s social media presence without his knowledge. The entire purpose of this group was to find things they considered to be “objectionable”. They took numerous out-of-context comments made by John and twisted them to portray him in a negative light. The group’s actions were subjective and unfair, and it was a clear attempt to silence John and suppress his freedom of expression. We started Students Against Tyranny as a means of bringing like-minded students together, especially as having these neurodivergent beliefs can be very isolating at times, with many being scared to talk about their opinions for fear of being labelled. Labelled in a way that shuts you up and potentially “ruins” your credibility among your peers. Unfortunately, being labelled in such ways (as a fascist, Nazi, racist, etc) fortifies your future as an outcast, but overall this should signify that they were never real friends in the first place. What transpired is far greater than what we ever imagined, we created an organised network of individuals who have become great friends and have gotten involved in some fantastic activism work. Students Against Tyranny was also used as a way to assist students legally – as opposed to just focusing on the social and active part of it – in times of need, for example, when NHS university students were told they could no longer study or go on hospital placements unless they complied with the draconian “must be jabbed” conditions. When we first heard about this, we were absolutely outraged, and thus after many sleepless nights the legal team put together a fantastic array of legal letters to aid in these situations. For the majority of students, this worked, however, unfortunately for some it did not.

if there was an increase in hostilities against white people as a consequence of the fallout from BLM or if the universities report was seen to increase racial tensions, then he wouldn’t suffer any reprisals… the fact that he’s not white meant he could say bad things about British history with no risk of a violent reprisal against him.” John was regularly invited to the pub on Friday evenings by other PhD students. At the time, he was unaware of their true intentions and enjoyed socialising with them over a few beers. Though he was always cautious not to drink too much since he was heavily involved in sports at the university and had training on Saturday mornings and was also aware that he was being asked probing questions at these events and did not want to put himself in a situation where he might say something regrettable. He further explained how universities are plagued with left wing and woke students/staff, further postulating, “to vote to leave the European Union was not really allowed. It’s just something you wouldn’t do… at least in their opinion.” And he’s right. These days, a lot of students expect you to think exactly the same way as them. And if you don’t, then you’re a “weirdo”, “far right”, “racist”, etc. I find it very ironic that all the people who claim it’s “okay to be different” are the very ones who push the ideology that we should think and act the same, and those who are neurodivergent should be demonised/punished for “wrongthink”.So you had a large mixture of students and professors who were acting like political activists who were all involved in this conspiracy to remove a student from the PhD program for “wrongthink”, which all started when he stated he voted to leave the European Union… may I remind you that these people consider themselves to be “anti-”fascists! Contrary to Hitler’s hopes, membership in the Hitler Youth did not make all boys and girls ardent Nazis for life. Hans Scholl, who later founded the White Rose resistance movement with his sister Sophie and was executed by the Nazis, was at one point a member of the Hitler Youth (see reading, Protests in Germany in Chapter 9). His sister Inge Scholl describes how Hans slowly became disillusioned with the group: Above: A supporter of SAT holds up copies of The Light, a Germany based publication that promotes conspiracies and has links to far-right groups such as the Reichsburg movement. The paper has recently been the subject of a BBC Radio 4 series called ‘Marianna in Conspiracyland’) In Manchester, on the 25th March at 1pm, outside the University on 188 Oxford Road, Students Against Tyranny will be rallying against institutionalised Marxism. But, why? Following the false accusation of threatening to burn down the library, John was subjected to two more meetings. During these meetings, he lodged complaints that his research had been excluded from the proceedings. Every December, there is a summary of everyone’s research, but John’s work was removed, effectively erasing his contributions. By disregarding his work, they were sending a message that his opinions and contributions were not worthy of consideration, which was a clear violation of academic integrity and respect.

How did Hans define “loyalty”? How did other young Germans whose stories you read in this chapter define “loyalty”? The reason is that these far-right groups, like ethnic-nationalists, want to turn up at SAT protests. And that is because they agree with the most prejudiced arguments that SAT use their rights to freedom of speech to advance. It will be a celebration, but also come prepared – if you’re worried about being outed, you should probably cover your face, and if you’re worried about heated interactions, you should probably stay away from the edges of the protest.” After the phone call had concluded, John returned to the meeting but having missed most of it, didn’t know what had been said. Christian wasn’t really taking this disciplinary that seriously either, as compared to previous ones, the accusations in this one, though they were all fabricated/twisted, were completely miniscule. I asked Shaw how he felt about the University of Manchester’s treatment of rent-striking students and their freedom of expression – arguably one of the most prevalent free-speech issues facing students here at the moment. Seemingly very aware of the police presence, and as I found out from later conversations, informed by some unpleasant past experiences of ‘kettling’ (a police tactic used to contain protests) – the counter-protesters eased the pressure and slowed the pace.

On October 20th 2021, James was asked to join Voice of Wales and become a part-time reporter, under the condition that his priority is Students Against Tyranny, James agreed and it was announced over Telegram. James has since worked as a reporter for Voice of Wales, and has done many videos ranging from the DVLA strikes, to discrimination, to Remeeces Music Video "BOOSTAH". Whether dehumanising and demonising certain groups such as trans and other LGBT+, immigrants or refugees, actively spreading misinformation such as anti-vaccination and other conspiracy theories – these ‘talking-points’ are intrinsically linked to the harm faced by many, and not only entrench it but contribute to it. Instead, what lies behind this thin veil of defending ‘free speech’ is the same ignorance, prejudice and divisive rhetoric as that of the groups SAT wish to distance themselves from. So what was really going on? As it later turned out, some of John’s fellow students were trying to bait him into making offensive statements, so they could report him to the university administration and lodge a complaint against him. They’re also meant to tell you who’s made the complaint about you, which, in this case, they weren’t doing. This is problematic as It means people John considered to be “friends” were making complaints about John’s speech and he had no idea who. This was essentially a tactic designed to silence him due to paranoia that the person he’s speaking to will report him. This is the aim of my project. I hope to help them hold the line just that little bit longer so they dont become pressured or coerced into taking the vaccine if they dont want to, which violates their right to informed consent. Sopade: Reports on German Youth” (1938), in The Third Reich Sourcebook, ed. Anson Rabinbach and Sander L. Gilman (Berkeley: University of California Press, 2013), 252. In his speech Harvey characterised John’s story as one of a student who was expelled for “wrongthink” – having opinions contrary to what the SAT describes as a “Marxist-based left-leaning education system”.

We are in coordination with some very large queer organisations here,” Diman said. “This is something that couldn’t really have happened otherwise because the trans community here is not that large, but it is very active.Varied, themed outreach based on or near the A580 East Lancashire Road (west of Manchester; east of the M6) into Salford and Manchester plus surrounding roads including the A6. Harrison, Rhodri (2021-09-21). "Students spreading Covid misinformation could face discplinary action". WalesOnline . Retrieved 2022-01-27. And herein lies the massive contradiction at the heart of what the so-called ‘free speech’ advocates of SAT argue.
