Linus himself is a lovable protagonist despite his prickliness, and Klune aptly handles his evolving feelings and morals. What caught me out the more I read through the novel, was how the mermaids either (a) appeared too little, or (b) when they were there, the threat rarely felt imminent. This is the second time I’ve used IT as an example in recent months, but at some stage in the book, the kids don’t really seem scared of Pennywise and because of that, I wasn’t either. Rolling in the Deep, which the Lovecraft Reread recently revisited, was published by Subterranean Press in 2015 and is followed by a full-length sequel, Into the Drowning Deep, from Orbit Books.

No Bisexuals: Tory in her internal monologue mentions encountering this attitude before, thinking of how people sometimes assumed she's just confused or indecisive over her sexuality, though it isn't the case and Tory's actually bisexual. It Can Think: While sirens are vicious predators, they are also sapient beings with multiple languages and the capacity for strategic planning. The Atargatis had found the mermaids because the people on the ship were made of meat, and the mermaids had empty stomachs that they wanted to fill. Bury Your Disabled: Slightly averted by Heather Wilson, as she wasn’t killed for being disabled, but was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. They can extend their jagged-tooth filled jaws to engulf and literally eat a person’s face off their skull. It even included two big game hunters everyone loved to hate: "They had traveled the world, taking their prey from every environment, every ecosystem.

Our Cryptids Are More Mysterious: The sirens resided primarily in the depths of the Mariana Trench, leading to them having been largely undiscovered for so long. The navy released the footage that was captured on the ship, but the everyday viewership believes it was faked. Personally, I enjoyed reading the prequel first, as I wanted to experience the events as they happened instead of it being relayed to me "second-hand" if that makes sense. It's an odd juxtaposition, because in one moment it feels so very now as to possibly be last week, and then the next there are momentary references to advanced technologies we haven't reached quite yet. Jill and Theo goad each other into new lows was fun to read and I was rooting for them to gather the tatters of their broken marriage into a semblance of a relationship, maybe. It’s about society and how we don’t take care of the habitats we are inhabiting, let alone the ones we aren’t. As soon as I met them, I felt sure they were the characters we were going to love being eaten, as the ghosts from all their big game hunts took revenge.

Since there are so many characters, we’re provided with events that are happing concurrently aboard the ship as well as the same events as experienced by specific characters.

Sapient Cetaceans: Imagine sent along a team of dolphins, one of whom gets his own viewpoint chapter, and who the crew considers to be people. Obviously we know going in that this book is about a nother group of scientists and specialists heading on an expedition to prove/disprove the theory of mermaids being the real deal.
