Sapporo Classic: a local brew only found in Hokkaido (though we also love the craft beers from Niseko Taproom) St Anton is renowned as the best in Austria but it is perhaps too popular and the famous piste-side bars are uncomfortably jammed to overflowing with plastered Brits, Dutch and Germans. It has fantastic off-piste routes like the Valluga and brings a lot of the best skiers in the world to party at the noisiest après ski bars in Austria. The Ski sign panel has the corners rounded and smoothed with four holes punched (one in each corner) so that can be easily mounted. Bar Val Thorens. Photo: Facebook (360BarValTho) 2. Because Après-Ski means after skiing, it starts at the moment when you are done with skiing for that day. And, for most riders and skiers, it means at some point in the late afternoon. Besides, some people take the rest of the day off and start partying in restaurants and lodges as early as midnight. It might surprise you but there isn’t any right or wrong way to experience Après-Ski. While some people might enjoy tasting the local alcohol and dancing to the rhythm, others might warm up with mulled wine and surround by a fire. When does it start? There’s loads of bars in Alpe d'Huez to try, but no pub crawl would be complete without visiting O’Sharkeys, Smithy's, Sphere Bar, Etalon rum Bar and The Underground Bar. If you want to stay up until the sun rises then you’ll be at the Igloo Bar that gets crazier and crazier all the way until the 6am closing time. Ferraris are usually parked out front of Badrutt’s Palace Hotel, and elite athletes often compete at the Kulm Hotel, credited as the birthplace of modern winter sports. Veuve Clicquot: As a toast of sorts to European après-ski, you can find slopeside “bubbly” bars sponsored by this French champagne house at top U.S. ski resorts like Utah’s Deer Valley and Aspen Snowmass in ColoradoSkiers often enjoy cheap American craft beer and signature Bloody Marys. Longhorn Saloon in Whistler is one of the town’s most popular après ski spots. Image: @longhornsaloon Craft beer: You’ll see hearty IPAs and porters from Washington State to Vermont. Notable brews include the Alchemist’s Heady Topper Double IPA out of Vermont and the Bavarian-style Skiesta Lager from Sierra Nevada Brewing Company For a long time Val Thorens has been considered the poor cousin of its neighbours in upmarket Méribel and super expensive Courchevel but recent years have seen a transformation into a more mid-range resort. There are still the cheap and tiny apartments available but now there are luxury hotels, top quality chalets, upmarket self-catered apartments and Club Med Val Thorens Sensations, right in the centre of town. It’s a great resort for early or late snow due to its height.

Not all après activities involve drinking either – you could try sledging down one of the resorts toboggan runs or enjoy a post-ski pampering in a hillside spa. When does Après-ski start? The après-ski scene is not identical worldwide; where and what you do changes depending on which country and resort you are in. European Alps During this time, they will dance in the snow and enjoy warm alcohol shots under sunlight. Besides, at around 3 pm, it is a normal sight to find skiers dancing on the tables while enjoying music. When does it end? Dancing outside in the snow or on benches to recorded or live music is common. Moreover, everything is done in ski clothing. While many argue that Après-Ski continues throughout dinner, others argue that it might last until bedtime. Craft beers: Try the Power Day Pilsner from Queenstown’s Altitude Brewing or the Kiwi Pale Ale from Wanaka-based Ground Up Brewing Colored sun cream – Do you intend to protect your skin while retaining a funky style? If so, grab a fluorescent sun cream and paint something different on your face. That way, it protects your soft skin and adds cool vibes at the same time. In the Après-world, France has almost taken the reigns from Austria with the proliferation of Folie Douce like establishments popping up everywhere. The newest addition is in Avoriaz 1800, standing out with its loud music on the slopes but still blending in with the resorts dynamic architecture. Other great places are the 360° Bar in Val Thorens, the Pano Bar in Les Deux Alpes, and especially Cocoricos in Val d’Isére. 1. Val Thorens, France The highest party town in the Alps St Anton (Austria) – The resort to popularise table dancing; famous for steins of beer, Jägermeister and oompah parties till the early morning.

Down in town there are more bars than you can visit in a night and the après starts early. The Frog and Roast Beef is the highest pub in Europe and draws a UK crowd. The dutch bar, Cafe Sneskois the rowdiest and most fun bar on the strip if you can take the crowds. They set the ceiling and bar on fire later in the evening but the best time to go is from 6 to 8pm where the bar staff all get involved with singing along to classics like Robbie William's angels and Hey Jude by the Beatles whilst playing drinking games which is great entertainment! VT is also home to the largest nightclub in the Alps in Malaysia. It looks like a hut on the slope as it's all underground. View ski holidays to Val Thorens > Headband – Adding a headband to your outfit is the final touch you can give to your Après-Ski party. Headbands keep away the sweat off your brows and hair.Val D’Isère (France) – Grab a mulled wine and listen to a live DJ at the famous ‘La Folie Douce’ to see what après is all about. Après ski is the most common question we get about resorts and I agree that it is an essential part of my ski experience. I may not want to party every afternoon, but when I do, I want very good music, cold beers, cheap shooters and the option of a sunny terrace. If it’s inclement weather then an indoor area with strong tables for dancing on with ski-boots and lots of alpine memorabilia and style will do. Après-ski by country Après-ski has been popular in Europe since the 1950’s. Image: @mooserwirt_official Other recommendations are the Ice Bar for more Europop beats at the bottom of the Penken gondola and The Scotland Yard Pub for a more Austrian-English ambiance if you want to sing along to some more recognisable songs. View ski holidays in Mayrhofen > Ski chalets and grand hotels, fondue and mulled wine, cobblestone streets and haute cuisine—Europe’s Alpine ski towns are generally known for their white-gloved elegance. But within a large swath of the Alps (from Austria to France), the après-ski scene also has a wild side that makes Hot Tub Time Machine look tame. Think cabarets, underground clubs, and late-night Euro-pop dance parties.

According to Snow Japan, prior to Covid-19, Japan was becoming a more frequent destination for Western snow lovers looking for a good après.Jägermeister (Austria and Switzerland): A licorice liqueur made with 56 herbs and spices (drop a shot of Jägermeister into Red Bull or beer to make the popular Jägerbomb) In some resorts, après continues well into the night as the alpine night clubs open up down in the villages. What do I wear for Après-ski?
