Can we say these pads will be just as good as the other time-tested legends in this guide? We just haven’t put enough miles on them yet. But, if we know anything about Rab, with a bit of love there’s a good chance they will be inching their way toward the top in no time. From a brand that knows what you need in the alpine, you better believe they’re quality. The obvious question when you see such a light, warm pad is, “how long will it survive”? While it’s not as durable as some of the heavier denier pads we cover here, we can say from personal experience that if you take care of it, it’ll fend off punctures and slow leaks over months of torture. Some sleeping pads have a women’s version or are designed specifically for women. They often look quite similar to their unisex cousins, but there are some differences that many female adventurers may appreciate. Now I have always had mixed feelings about double pads. Kind of like double sleeping bags – I love the concept – but the reality does not always produce the best night’s sleep.

This pad is super comfortable and affordable, plus it has an awesome inflation bag to make setting up camp a breeze

I don't know if this is a new change for all Klymit pads, but the "patch kit" for the Insulated Static V Luxe is just a piece of gear tape. My old 2011 Static V "patch kit" is glue + a patch that looks like the actual material of the pad. I have never needed to use my old patch kit, but I presume the gear tape is not as good/permanent fix as the old patch kit. The side rails help cradle your body in the center, even if you toss and turn. The V-Shape also helps keep you in place, and lofts your sleeping bag to keep you warmer. You can now directly compare the R-value of mats rated using the ASTM F3340-18 with confidence that is a fair and accurate comparison between mats. In simple terms, the higher the R-value, the warmer the mat. While we haven’t had the chance to put it through a 2,000+ mile trek yet, it’s shown little wear and tear as we’ve tested it, and a plethora of online comments praise its durability and comfort over the length of a taxing thru-hike. We’d say you don’t have to worry about this falling apart any time soon. Sleeping pads typically come in various sizes, and users can choose the option that best suits their body and preferences. Common sizes include regular, which is usually around 6 feet long, and large, which tends to be closer to 80 inches. Pad width also varies, but anywhere between 18 and 26 inches is fairly standard.

Insulation is important even in summer because you lose body heat to the ground. With an R-Value of only 1.3, the Static V2 is not recommended for cold temperatures. If you’re looking for something warmer, have a look at the ThermaRest NeoAir XLite NXT. While it is on the heavier/bulky side, for the insulation and overall comfort you are getting, we feel they’ve kept it very light and manageable. The R-value of a pad describes the amount of insulation between the user and the ground. Insulation prevents your body heat from escaping into the earth below. Without a well-insulated pad, sleeping on the ground is very chilly, even when the air temperature is reasonably warm.

On the other hand, if you spend a lot of time winter camping and in high elevation, you should opt for a sleeping pad with a much higher R-value. Now for me, that's not a major issue as I don't plan on using this in the winter months. It may get used in early spring and late fall, and I think the insulating factor it does have will do fine for me. If you're a winter camper that relies on true R-value, you may want to consider other brands. Sea to Summit has yet again graced our list. This time with the Comfort Plus SI sleeping pad. This is the pad to go with if the priority is 3-season comfort above all else. Delivering a cushy 2.5 inches of padding, this self-inflating sleeping pad is also built from 30-denier stretch-knit top fabric, which is going to deliver a slightly more durable performance over lightweight pads. On my first night on the Static V2, I felt that I slept much more comfortable thanks to the body mapping. The V-shape cradles your body, so you don’t slip off your pad or twist your sleeping bag around in the middle of the night.

What Other Sleeping Pads Should You Consider?

As the name suggests, the sleeping pad has a “V” shape from the center, while the outer edges are rectangles that form somewhat of a side rail. See the photo above. Once inflated, it's a great size. I'm a side sleeper and the extra width is welcome for a person like myself. I'm also a bigger guy and can say that unless you're sitting up, you don't feel the ground at all. (even on your side) The mat has excellent support and is quite comfortable. On a personal note, I am curious to see how far I can push this Kylmit pad into cold temperatures. Despite the low R-value, I had no trouble sleeping on this non-insulated pad at 40 F (4.4 C) degrees. I didn’t use an insulation or a blanket between the pad and tent and my sleeping bag either. Eventhough this is a summer pad, it kept me warm as we approach fall out here in the Sierra Nevada mountains. This is one of the many reasons I am super impressed with Kylmit pads. Both myself (a cold sleeper and 5’6” woman), and my boyfriend (a hot sleeper and 6′ male) tested the Klymit sleeping pad. While this pad is insulated – it does not deliver the same cold weather protection from the freezing terrain beneath the pad as well as some of the other pads on this list. When it comes to saving weight, there are always going to be compromises – and the compromise here is the relatively low R value.
