Fishermen know that the sea is perilous and the storm fearful, but have never thought the perils reason enough for deciding to take a stroll along the beach instead. Nhiều trang thư miên man sự miêu tả sống động những thứ mà Vincent nắm bắt được, cách dùng từ gợi cảm luôn phiên nhau như những cơn sóng từ ngữ uyển chuyển ập vào tâm trí người đọc.

It seemed to me that you were suffering, like me, from seeing our youth go up in smoke - but if it throws out new growth in one's work, then nothing is lost, for the capacity to work is another form of youth. In just over a decade, he produced more than 2,100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings and more than 1,300 watercolours, drawings, sketches and prints. If I could travel back in time, I would do so only to hold Vincent’s hands in my own to say, “I see you. The brothers had agreed that in exchange for providing Vincent with a monthly allowance, Theo would receive all of his artworks. His words shook me to the core and broke my heart some times, inspired and uplifted me at other times.I wydaje mi się, że właśnie ten zbiór można potraktować jako jego ostatni, namalowany z największą skrupulatnością i jędrnym, zdecydowanym wyczuciem gestu, autoportret. But the letters selected (mostly to Van Gogh's brother Theo) tell a fairly complete story of Van Gogh's inner life. His knowledge of art history is equally impressive, as he, for example, compares Shakespeare’s and Rembrandt’s understanding of human nature. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. Throughout the entire book I came to feel, and inhabit, his struggle, his pain, his lack of recognition for what he deemed so important in total to his life.

A woman is a ‘quiet different being’ from a man and a being we do not yet know, or at best only superficially, as you put it, yes, that I am sure.

It is interesting to read his letters from this stage of his life as he seems to be quite fundamentalist, however as it turns out that theology wasn’t down his alley either, so he decided to become a missionary to the Dutch miners. The widespread and popular realisation of his significance in the history of modern art did not begin until his adoption by the Fauves and German Expressionists in the mid-1910s. The works of his early Dutch period are somber-toned, sharply lit, genre paintings of which the most famous is "The Potato Eaters" (1885). I know when I started on GR I didn’t always review my book selections because I was trying to list hundreds of volumes (and I still forgot to list many I’d read).

But I always admired his paintings for being decorative, for the bright colors, distinct style, and textures. Sometimes Vincent wrote Theo every day—beyond the need to acknowledge financial support, describing England and the Netherlands. In 1888 he left Paris for the Provencal landscape at Arles, the subject of many of his best works, including Sunflowers .For instance, he came up with the Starry Night and pondered painting it for two years before actually doing it. To see such unqualified devotion, not in a novel or on a stage, but in the real, intimate context of his daily life is (to use a hackneyed word) inspiring. Actually, this aspect of his life probably isn’t all that surprising considering his father was also a preacher.
